You can create a generic annotation with a label that uses the shared parameter and then add that to the Drafting View.

Is it possible to display the value of a shared parameter from an instance in a drafting view? I'm imagine some text that comes in as the shared parameter value and updates when the shared parameter value is updated.

(I think the answer is "no", and I also think the answer is "that's crazy, why would you possibly want to do that?", but I want to do one last check before deciding it can't be done.)

Based on these answers I think I might have been unclear. I don't think they solve my problem, but I'll admit that could be me not understanding them.

Here's an example:

I have three transformers insert in my project, each with a different "Panel Name" value (built-in parameter). They also all have a "KVA" value (shared parameter).

I want to go to a drafting view and insert text there that is controlled by these values.

In my drafting view I insert three pieces of text that correspond to each transformer's "Panel Name" (labels, tags, annotations? Not sure what they would be inserted as. This is where my Revit ignorance shows). I have three pieces of text in the drafting view, T1, T2, T3.

Then I go back to the transformer, and in properties change the "Panel Name" of one (from T3 to T4). In the drafting view, the text there updates from T3 to T4.

And something similar for the "KVA" shared parameter. Three pieces of text, 100, 100, 100. Select the transformer in the model, change the value from 100 to 150, and have the text in the drafting view update to match. Now I have three pieces of text, 100, 100, 150.

No, the drafting view won't have just these labels. There will be other stuff in there. Symbol representing the transformer. Line representing a connection between them. The labels are one piece of a larger problem I'm trying to solve.

Add a shared parameter to the project, associate with Detail Items so that it can talk to the transformer symbol. Hopefully they are Detail components? Create a detail item tag accordingly with a label that also has the Shared Parameter.

For further clarification and clarity - can you share the family?

For a specific example, open the rme_basic_sample_project.rvt in the Revit samples folder. The initial view has some panels and transformers with their names displayed. I want to be able to display those names in a drafting view.

Is this what you are talking about?

Panel Name is a built in parameter and can't travel across from Electrical Equipment to a detail component and its tag. However, you can create a shared parameter, add to the project and associate it with Detail Components and add the name (manually, I'm afraid) to the transformer detail component properties. The same parameter added to a Detail Item tag will show the name in the drafting view.

Yes, that's what I was talking about. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

To finish out the thought, if the shared parameter was associated with the Electrical Equipment, there's no way to get that information automatically to the detail component in the drafting view.

Nope. As @ToanDN rightly pointed out, Drafting Views are an animal on their own. The other approach would be enlarged detail sections, in which case the existing family and tags would work.

David;

If you can make this work, I'd love to know how. I do big functional diagrams for AV in Revit and am frustrated by the duplicate entry work.

I've used Dynamo to do a couple of tricky things, but Dynamo itself has a substantial learning curve if you go that way.

Cheers,

Dave

I never did follow up on my idea for making this work. Got distracted by other projects. I'm not sure Dynamo would be quite up to the task, though I don't totally understand what all Dynamo can and can't do. My approach was going to be write a custom add-in in .Net.

Hi David;

As you are probably already aware, shared parameters can be selected into drafting families, but the drafting family instance can't be associated to a model family instance, so we have to re-enter the instance and type data . Fixing this might solve the problem.

DC (Dave)
