Hi,

I'm trying to schedule some partitions, and I was wondering how best to schedule the Metal Studs, in linear foot. I have the area in sqft and maybe with formulas can generate it in linear feet, but wanted to ask if I can somehow maybe through Curtain Wall or somehow. Any suggestions.

Thanks!

edit: can I through modelling achieve to schedule metal studs

Should be easy to accomplish. Would need more information about your workflow though.

Are the Metal Studs actual individual components in the Project? What Category do the Metal Studs belong to? Or, are you trying to determine individual Stud information from overall length and height of compound-layered Basic Wall Types?

Yes, Curtain Walls could be used as well with Studs as Mullions.

Depending on what you have available in your project exactly (e.g. families, parameters).

You can add a formula to a schedule. Other option might be to add one or more parameters with relevant values to your families. Also dynamo might be an option to assist with the calculations.

Maybe you can upload relevant part of your project so that we can have a look and have a better understangdng of your situation.

You could:

Make a custom curtainwall, with custom "stud shaped" mullions. Set them at 16" or 24" on center per your req'ments.

Then create a Schedule of Mullions by the "stud" type mullion. This will give you quantity and lengths of the "stud mullions".

Edit: But just because you "can" doesn't always mean you "should"! As this would not be a practical way to develop your walls. The Schedule with Area/formula and calculated value is probably more appropriate.

See this: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/material-takeoff/td-p/7058980

What kind of schedule are you working with (Parts, Walls, Curtain Walls, yada, yada...)?

@Anonymous

There are three approaches:

1. Use a formula to calculate the studs based on the wall linear feet and height. This is the old school way, not very accurate when you have fenestration and sloped roofs but maybe acceptable practically.

2. Model the studs and schedule them using curtain walls or adaptive components. Either way, the studs should be modeled as a separate entity from the walls.

3. Pay for an add-on and have it do it for you. Example:

http://www.aga-cad.com/products/bim-solutions/wood-framing-wall

I created it as a new family, with the desired profile, but I don't know how to put the formula.

Below are 2 pictures, in the profile in the family types properties there is a "Height" do I put the formula there.

@Anonymous: Isn't this about Scheduling? If so why are you needing the formula in the Family? Put the formula in a Calculated Parameter Field with the Schedule. However, I'm not sure why you even need it. Sounds like renaming the column named "Length" to "Linear Feet" would suffice. And, you don't put the formula inside the Mullion; it's just a 2D Profile. But, CW Mullion Schedules will itemize Mullion lengths (aka: "Linear Feet").

Not sure I understand. The count isn't really germane. The Length (aka Linear Feet) of those units it what you're after, I thought. If your studs are purchased in 8'-0" lengths, then to find the total number of 8'-0" studs needed for the job, you'd write the number formula: (Length/8'-0") and Calculate Total (under Formatting tab).

Just one thing though, maybe I didn't clarify, the Length is the length of one Mullion (or the height of the wall) so my wall in 20' and there are 148 vertical Mullions @ 16 OC with Height of 20'. That's why I want to calculate (20' x 148 = 2960') but in schedule the Count doesn't show up in the formula options. Thanks!

You don't need a formula. Add a Calculated value parameter (type = Length) and name it Total Length. Enter in the formula:

Length

Go to Format tab and set the Total Length field to Calculated total. It will report the total Length

I just need the total length of metal studs in a project. There may be 1 floor, 5 floors sometimes 12 floors, the Height differs project to project. I don't know if they buy the studs at 8' or 10'. I know I can later in excel calculate the totals, but I wanted to know why I can't use a formula because I have the Length of the Mullion and the Total Number of Mullions. It's not only for this project, I just wanted to know why I can't multiply a length with an integer/number.

Thanks.
