Creating a Column Wrap

A question - what would be the most advisable option to add wraps to columns? Here are the specs for the wraps -

1) created on 1 5'8" stud + 5'8" GWB one side

2) New Construction, going around 81 existing columns

3) all the same height

Options to create - pick the best (to my mind they are in order of advisability) -

1) generic model family, with symbolic lines to show the wall structure in plan

2) model the walls, group and copy them

3) option 2 with the group exported out to an RVT and linked in

#2, for many reasons:

-Prefer to "model as it will be built" with walls vs GM

-Ability to edit Wall types -- Level constraints, etc. vs GM

-Ability to Tag Wall Types

-Groups are preferred over Links, especially for situations like this

-If columns/grids change, edit the Group live inside the Arch model

Another option is create a slightly larger architectural column family and place it over the existing columns.

Option # 2, always.

Try to stay away from that # 1.

Option # 3 is weird. 🙂

Correction, in my previous reply, I vote for # 2, but as walls, yes, as Cliff said, not as generic models.

That sounds like an interesting business! Architectural column covers are a great way to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of a building’s design. They can be made from a variety of materials like fiberglass, aluminum, steel, or even stone, and they help conceal structural columns while adding an elegant or modern touch to a space.

Would you like some help with marketing strategies, product descriptions, or maybe advice on the types of materials and designs that are trending in the industry? Feel free to share more details!

Great post — always interesting to see how different materials come into play in design. If anyone’s looking into wrapped or split columns for renovations or new builds, here’s a helpful resource: Split Column Wraps & Column Covers
