So it took me quite a while to figure out that there was a solution offered in this thread, so I might pose my interpretation of the solution in different terms before offering another version of the problem I am running into. Here goes. You have a wall in Phase 0 with a door in it. in phase 3 you are demoing the door. You go back to phase 0 to change the wall to an 'existing wall' type that you weren't using previously. It gives you the error message. But, if you go to phase 3 and try to change the wall type, you can, because that is the same phase that the infill element for the door is being automatically created and will change both at the same time.

Here is the twist. You have 13 phases in your project expected to take 5 years to construct. you are adding and removing doors in the same wall multiple times before ultimately removing the wall altogether. I could not change the wall type without removing the second door from the wall altogether and putting it back into the project in a new wall, which isn't actually what we would be doing.

Why is this program always limiting your ability to design because the program itself is based on simple basic projects? So frustrating!!! I sick of spending all my time trying to find new, more clever workarounds for the programs failings!

You get the error message if you change the wall type after you already demo'd something from that wall in the next phase(s).

A new window or door in an existing wall is going to still have an infil element, only it is something being removed.

That is why you see dashed lines where the window/door is being removed in the demo view.

(this brings up another issue already mentioned in the Ideas that the line of the width of the wall should show as well)

Here is how I replicate it:

Edit: I tried the incident 118912 steps and I can change the wall type no problem. What gives?

Sightly different:

Documented Incident ID 118912:

Create a wall in existing phase.

Place a window in existing phase.

Try to change the wall type.

create a wall under Existing, demo it under New

place a door under New in that wall

Okay, we'll add yours as Incident ID:118921.1

What's the method @robertovalentino used though? Maybe it will qualify as an Incident ID: 118921.2.

Works for me too, @Anonymous. That's why I'm asking how @robertovalentino did it. Maybe this isn't a Chernobyl incident. Maybe it's just an order-of-operation thing like I first said.

Now this one makes more sense and will create the error:

create a wall under Existing

place a door under New in that wall

change the infill wall to a different type will trigger the error.

Only doors trigger the error. Windows do not.
