So if I have a family without a generic model host in it already, can you make one? Or do you have to start with the generic face based family template?

I've created a Generic Model Face Based extrusion that does not appear in the project model. It is not visible when placing it using the component command or dragging it from the family tree. Various faces will highlight (wall, floor) showing where is can be placed, and after I click a symbol appears acknowledging its existence, but the generic model is not visible. It can be selected only by going to the family tree and selecting "select all instances in entire project", and then it will show that same symbol and location where it was placed, but it is not visible. Once selected it can be deleted.

I'm using the Revit 2019 OOTB Generic Model face based family which has a basic extrusion that can only be edited. I created parameters for length, width and thickness. It can't be deleted. I'm just trying to create a tile family to place on walls and floors for basic layouts and counts.

Thanks in advance for any help. mpp

I guess you did not draw anything in the family. The pre-existing solid in teh family will not appear when you load in project. It is sort of a placeholder host for you draw your own elements on top.

Hi ToanDN - yes, your right. I just realized that right after I made the post. I didn't draw anything new. The pre-existing generic model is the face the generic model is to be drawn on. Sorry, it's been some time since I did this... Thanks! mpp

Just to add a little bit of information.

The host is drawn, not only as a visible reference but also to host voids. For example, when you want to cut the face of something in your project, you can draw a void in the face based family and let it cut the example host. That way it will cut geometry automatically when placing it in the project environment.

Not the expert here, but you have to start with the correct family template. Hosts are built into the family and cannot be added.

Well that's unfortunate. I made a plumbing fixture from the plumbing fixture template, now I want it to cut a wall. I guess I'll either nest it into a generic face based family then change it to a plumbing fixture.

Or I'll just do it over with the generic face based template then change it to a plumbing fixture family. Knowing me, that's what I'll do.

either option sounds like the right direction, but I can't comment as to pros/cons. Maybe one of the experts can advise.
