Revit Template vs Revit Project File

My company is about to overhaul or company template. One of the ideas out there is to use a project file to start all projects from rather than a template file. The argument is That the project file will improve, view templates, linked files and worksharing can be included.

We will have templates for each discipline so I think each template can reference the other templates so the view templates can be set up with the linked rvt files included. When the project is created from the template it is then just a matter repathing the links.

Obviously I’m not a fan of the project file approach but I’d love to hear any pros/cons people have for either method.

I find no benefits of using a Template over a Project to start a new Project.

- Templates have no work sharing capability so you would have to re-create worksets every time you start a project from them

- You cannot have more than one person contribute to a Template content at the same time for the same reason

- Templates have no backups

Now if you can share one reason to use it aside from a template selection dialog then I am all ear.

I'd keep it as a template. You can still have links to other models already created for view templates and filters. As a project though you risk the chance of someone starting a project and saving over your "starting project". This happened to me at a previous employer as we tried the same thing and only certain people had full rights to the file.

You have probably already made a decision on this, but for any others coming along later, my office has both set up (changed are made to the prototype project file, and then a new template file is set up from that file). New projects are almost exclusively started from the prototype projects. We have some disciplines that overuse worksets; having them preset in the prototype project makes life easier for everyone.

They should have backups, mine do. It might be a read-only folder issue for someone who doesn't have write access to the folder?

When you frequently link other trades into your model and use View Templates/Filters to manage their appearance a placeholder link allows you to preset such things and then use Reload From to reference their models when you get them.
