Roof Errors

I'm working in Revit 2018.3. I don't understand my issue in the slightest. I tried creating a roof, from foot print, and I kept deleting lines til it would create. I literally can not get a roof to create with more than 6 sides. Is there something wrong with build of Revit? I've attached a snippet of a roof shape that errors out.

What sort of roof are you hoping to make? Right now you've got all the segments as Defines Slope (small triangle symbol indicates slope). If you want a flat roof then each segment should not have Defines Slope checked. The plan of the building does not suggest you'll be able to slope every eave of a roof, the notches and bays don't look like they've been conceived of with a sloped roof in mind.

The attached roof design isn't anywhere close to where it needs to be. But my initial footprint kept giving me errors, so I kept deleting parts til it didn't give me an error. I got down to a 6 sided roof before it didn't error. The attached image was an example of what should be a simple 4 sided hip roof with a hip bump out, yet even such a simple design is throwing errors.

Are you sure the pitch works? Go to elevation and verify by drawing some Ref. Lines.

Exactly.. but I'm getting nothing but errors. I just sketched a square, offset the square evenly and still received an error.

Start a fresh roof by footprint and sketch the perimeter instead of pick walls...assuming you did that... Also what roof type and settings have been assigned to it?

This roof also has opening in the middle, not cut openings, but sloped openings. I'm getting notices now that I can't have interior lines that have a slope?? So how do I create a roof like I have modeled using a sweep.

I'm just using the Basic 9" Roof, 5"/12" Slope.

By Footprint you'd need two roofs. The issue is the interior boundary. Revit doesn't like that condition. They can meet at a corner but you need to break the roof so they aren't a closed loop.

ugh.. Having to do that work around is surely going to cause even more issues haha. I was able to make a more complex roof by drawing the lines and not selecting lines. So thank you for that.

as Steve said it can be done using a join of two roofs

You can get there with a single monolithic roof using Modify Sub Elements and 2 Spit Lines.

Thought about that for 10 seconds but I got the impression that the perimeter might not be so simple. If not then the triangulation will be hard to contend with plus getting the pitch set to whatever they want involves a little trigonometry.

Trig? Huh? You don't need to go through any mental gymnastics to do this. If someone does, then they are in the wrong business. IMHO.

Why the snark?

How do you decide how high to move the ridge Split Line up to have a 8/12 pitch roof? It's based on rise/run no? So you need to know the overall width of the roof and calculate it somehow? Sure I can just give it any old offset value but the pitch won't be a "clean number" which will beg the next questioning post...how do I get my slope annotation to read out X:X...and then the answer is change the rounding? Or set the offset accurately?

Maybe you're right. Modify Sub Element tools may be impractical or impossible.

Suggesting I might be in the wrong business if I need to resort to math seemed snarky to me. It's been my experience that working with roofs and knowing trig (even as little as I know) has been helpful quite a lot.

I don't see how simple it would be to deal with a roof like this with shape editing, no matter how much I like to use the feature.

I wish my roof was simple enough for a sub-element modification. As you can see however it's alot more intricate. There's still ALOT to add to this as well.
