It is impossible to downgrade and it is impossible to sync between versions.

Therefore it is important to follow these steps when upgrading.

-Sync and close all local files.

-Upgrade the central file to 2019 (or whatever version)

-Create new local files based on the upgraded central file.

I think it wasn't the central file you got. Best practice is to have the central file always in one location. Sending it is not recommended. It is better to create a detached model if you have to review something. If you want to create local files from a central file, you need direct access on a server.

I'm having trouble setting up a new Revit project. I was given the central file via app.box.com and saved that to my computer. When I opened the file it told me it had to upgrade to 2019 as thats the version on my computer. Then a text box came up saying that "once upgrades, changes to *file name* cannot be synchronized with the central model" and if I "wish to save changes to the central model, use the previous version of Revit before upgrading either the central or local model."

Can anyone point me in the correct direction? Do I need to downgrade my Revit to continue and if so, how do I do that?

If you are collaborating with the people who gave you the 2017 file, you should be working in 2017.

Open the file with 2017 and choose the detach from central option. Then save the file to a different name for use in your model. Plenty of instructions out there on how to set-up a collaboration project.

As mentioned already, you cannot.

Revit is not (and never has been) backwards compatible.

i.e. you cannot "save down" to a previous version.

These issues should be known and discussed before collaborating.

If you have a license to 2019 you should still have a license for 2017 as well. Go to Manage.Autodesk.com and take a look. If you are using the trial...then you are out of luck and you should chat with the people you are working with to see if they have a 2017 license you can use.
