Existing doors in schedule

(New to Forum & 1st post, so pardon me if I missed something...)

So,

This is something we are facing in multiple projects and want to know if there is a easy way of doing it -

Project has - 20 new doors, 100 existing doors (to remain) & 10 existing doors have new finishes/ Hardware & I wish to schedule only those 10 existing doors in the schedule along with the 20 new doors.

I cannot use phase filter since both existing and new doors need to be in the schedule.

I can add a yes/no parameter & add a filter. But that means I need to manually check 10 doors out of 100 to show.

Is there a quicker/efficient way to do it?

So the finishes and hardware of 10 existing doors are changed in a later phase? How are you going about this? That is, how are you Phasing Door Materials and Hardware?

there is only 1 new construction phase. In this phase we are adding 20 new doors and repainting/and or hardware change to the existing 10 (out of 100) doors.

Let me confirm my understanding.

You have an Existing Phase and a New Construction Phase.

You have 100 doors created in the Existing Phase with Phase Demolished set to "None".

You have 20 doors created in the New Construction Phase with Phase Demolished set to "None".

You have 10 of the 100 Existing doors receiving new finishes and hardware in the New Construction Phase. Does this mean you are actually changing the Door geometry Material, and adding or replacing existing Hardware geometry?

...you are aware that Schedules have the ability to report based on Phase/Phase Filter; right?

Yes you got it right , we are not changing door geometry at all. We are not even putting in under "demo" as the door will show up in demo plans. we intend to highlight this change in the schedule only.
Let me explain it this way, suppose a room is getting all new finishes but there is an existing door so we would re paint the existing door . How do I make this specific door show in my schedule. I will manually input the finish in my schedule under finish. Also, in case of hardware change I will manually type it under comments/hardware set. All I am trying to understand is how can I have few existing doors and all new doors to show up in my schedule.
Does this explain is better?

Yes, that does explain it better. That's precisely what I'm wondering. How the heck do you "DEMO" the properties of an existing door in a later phase? I got to gnaw on this one a bit.

...Just to clarify; I don't see an issue with scheduling per se. There are all kinds of filtering methods you can use. It's about how to replace an existing door parameter value with another value in a later phase.

- Set the schedule Phase to New Construction, Phase Filter to Show Complete

- Select all the doors (existing and new) that you want to schedule and enter an unique value in Comments field, such as To Schedule

- Use the Comments filed to filter your schedule

(If the Comments filed is not available, you can add a new parameter (Y/N, text, integer, etc...) and use it to filter similarly.)

Yes ! I have done it other way around where I wrote "do not schedule" in comments and filtered it to not display. But its still a work around. It worked since we use the comments field for other notes, the ones not needed could be filled with "do not schedule" as they are anyway hidden. I am been experimenting with y/n parameters and seems easier to check/uncheck when there are 500 doors.

Looking for easier methods 🙂

So this is not about "demo'ing" an existing parameter values for 10 of 100 doors, and replacing with "new" parameter values in a later Phase? For example, the "Finish" and "Hardware" parameter values for those 10 doors were "Unfinished" and "No Hardware" in one Phase, and then changed to "Stained" and "Round Brass Door Knob" in a later Phase.

What not just demo and replace those 10 doors in New Construction? Then schedule New Construction work only (Phase Filter = NEW).

You can't get away from check a box or pick a value for any existing doors you want to schedule. You still have to tag them one by one, correct?

Another way is create an interim phase after existing and before new, and keep those doors in that phase. Then, you can have two schedules, one for new doors: phase = new, phase filter = new only; one for existing: phase = interim, phase filter = new only. This maybe a more practical approach because the existing door schedule needs not show all the fields that the new door schedule has.

I cannot demo the doors as in reality are they not getting "demo-ed" and my demo plans will show it as demo'ed (dotted).

Till I find a better solution this is what I am doing -

1. I removed all auto generated door marks/tags using isolate.

2. I will tag all those doors that I need to keep only.

3. In schedule I will see all those marked/numbered doors - doors i need basically. (show complete, new construction in phase filter)

4. I added a Y/N visibility parameter and then will filter to show with "yes"...... check 7 floors and 500 doors !!!

Yes, I get that. They are just being "refurbished" in New Construction. How about an actual "Demo" Phase instead of demolishing in New Construction? That might be a way to do it.

Example:

3 Phases: Existing, DEMO, New Construction

90 doors: Phase Created=Existing, Phase Demolished=None

10 doors: Phase Created=Existing, Phase Demolished=DEMO

10 doors (w/ Finishes and Hardware added): Phase Created=DEMO Phase Demolished=None

All New Construction Doors: Phase Created=New Construction, Phase Demolished=None

Schedule: Phase=New Construction Phase Filter=Show Complete. Filter by "Phase Created"=Does Not Equal "Existing".

Hmmm.... yes this could be one way of looking at it. It may work. But adding a whole new phase to the entire project just for a few doors..... may seem like complicating things for some projects.

Might work for some !!!

How do you see it as complicated? If Revit couldn't handle something as simple as this, I'd be using Archicad.

Unfortunately, the addition of phase is not just for doors, its the whole project. so new users in the team (who already are confused) will need to understand that things are still getting demo-ed in new construction phase and only the doors that will be refinished are getting demo-ed in the new demo phase and will also need a quick check on the phase/phase filter for other plans.

Just thinking holistically !

FYI: On/Off check boxes have a NULL value on creation. In other words, they are neither "Yes" or "No" until you activate them. The ones you are showing in your screenshot that are checked and grayed out, are not activated. So, you may need to go through all 100-plus doors and activate their Yes/No parameters. Might be easier to just filter by "comments" or some other pre-existing parameter they all share. That way you only have to mess with 10 rather than a 100-plus.

There is no need to clear the box for 90 doors. Just check 10 doors and leave the rest Null (if some are accidentally cleared that's okay). The filter still works: Not Equal Yes.

as i said : "you MAY need to go through all 100-plus doors and activate their Yes/No parameters". Still, if you aren't going to use 100-plus check boxes, then why bother with them? Seems unnecessary.

Okay what about this -

3. I apply a filter for mark/tags (number in schedule)as in the image ... only doors i know that i want & i tagged show up !!!!
