How Can I Create Detailed Dormer

Hello guys,

I am trying to recreate this dormer (see images below). The dormer must be an exact copy of that in the images.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Nothing looks too difficult here. Walls are straight plumb vertical. Windows and trim are unique, but doable. Roof is … well a roof. I'd suggest looking past all the ornamentation and get the easy parts modeled first. Walls and Roof. Frame it.

Yeah I have got as far as you have shown in your image.

it's the detailing and curves i'm struggling with as this has to be an exact replication of the dormer in the photos

Maybe just put 3 curtain wall there and edit profile to match the existing.

You can also model in place the corner bits, possibly a cube with 45 degree void cornice shape...

And model in place Revolve the top bit.

Are you talking about these "bonnets" -- or whatever they are called. There's some French Gothic Architectural term for them. I In-Placed Modeled them. Solid extrusion cut with a void extrusion. But seriously my man; I'd save off doing them to the end. You've got a lot of work to do before you go there. I'd get your Walls, Roofs and Windows finalized first. Especially the Windows. Those are custom sizes and shapes.

...call them out as "Archivolts". Even if it isn't the correct term, it'll impress the client.

Not actual Rotate command if you used extrusion with the side as work plane, probably easier to use Sweep Void and Pick Line the 45 degree edge.

I don't know what you are talking about. I'm showing the OP how I created the Archivolts. If you want to do it another way, then knock yourself out.

Because it looks like those cornice, it’s curved on side, not flat if you know what I mean......

Yeah, I just don't see 'em that way -- otherwise I would have done them that way. They look more like an Architectural feature I seen used throughout the Notre Dame Cathedral. You see them used all over France. Typically, there is an arch window directly under them. The window wall doesn't curve.

@Anonymous: Do you have anyway to verify? If your intent is an "exact copy" as you said, I would assume you have other construction information. Maybe other pictures from different vantage points? Just curious to know for sure. No biggie if not verified.

I've just been trying to do this, however am running into some strange issues.

I have created the necessary model in place extrusions but when I attempt to rotate the void model its rotating about an incorrect point (see below images).

Is there a way to change this as I've never experienced this before

You don't need to rotate it. Just sketch the extrusion Profile on a named Ref. Plane/Work Plane that is at a 45 degree angle.
