I am using Revit 2019 right now, full version. Our firm has different area calculations we need for different municipalities. Sometimes we calculate from face of sheathing (substrate), sometimes from face of core, sometimes face of finish, and for interiors sometimes we do a centerline between units (hotels and apartments). We end up revising projects frequently, and as it stands, a lot of our area boundaries were just drawn manually, resulting in a long manual process of re-aligning all of those lines. Anyone have a method for keeping those area lines accurate through revisions, no matter what face we have had to calculate from? Can I create area boundary rule types? That would be ideal, as it would make drawing the initial area boundaries much faster.

Why not just constrain your Area Boundaries with locked dimensions?

So we typically need areas to the outside of sheathing. Would we constrain
them with a 0'' dimension? It would be time consuming, but better than
updating the areas everyone time we had a change. Would this work well with
links? Any experience with that? Thanks
Sorry, a revit link. We frequently link in our interior floor plans,
especially when dealing with units that have the same floor plans repeated.

It sounds like your close to solving your problem. Just be sure the root cause of your problem isn't the BOMA (Office Std) type. Depending what you select will dynamically shift the boundary lines. If your doing custom calculations (Non-office Std), be wary of the BOMA Area Type field.

If you need Area Phasing options then you probable will need to add a new color schema. Arch Tab/Room & Area Calculations. I don't think the out of the box Gross & Rentable area will meet your needs. If you wish to modify your templates, Linked-in Learning (Formerly Lynda.com) has a nice video from Paul Aubin titled; Revit Area Calculations. It sounds like you need some derivative that is covered in Chapter 3. One month is only $30/Mo.

Good Luck
