Hello,

I work for a small design firm. We use Revit versions 2016-2020. I have been having issues syncing my local files with our central models for about a month now, across versions 2017, 2018 and 2019. We store central models on a network drive (Q:) and local files to the standard My Documents location.

When I attempt to synchronize with the central, I get the error message: "An unknown error occurred while accessing \incrementtable.dat" The file name varies but it is always a .dat.

We have cleared all local files from my documents and emptied the recycle bin. I have tried resetting the network and remapping the drives. The fix is always only temporary.

I am happy to provide any more info you need. Thank you,
Rae

Just to clarify - you're asking me to plug into another ethernet port that connects to the same network?

Edit: I was told that we've tried that with the other port in the wall plate. We have yet to test a completely different wall plate but that would require I lose my computer for a while so I'll let you know when we get a chance to do so. Thanks!

have you tried disabling your anti-virus? this is a weird one, not sure what the issue might be - but i would try that to see if it is somehow impacting the problem.

also, could the server be placing a lock on the file (the .dat file) - and not releasing it?

I've wasted too many hours trying to track down similar issues only to find out it was a bad network connection that I tend to check these things early. If moving the computer is too much of a hassle, you could change out the cord. I've had cords go bad, too.

That makes sense. We will most likely just move the computer, our ethernet cables are not long enough. I will also suggest we try switching out the cable to make sure that isn't the issue.

Revit is allowed through the firewall, is this enough or should I try actually disabling it entirely? The file does not seem to be locked - it was easily moved to another location so it seems to not be in use by any processes.

I've had exactly this problem for several years now with various versions of Revit from 2016 onwards and it has been driving me up the wall. I have tried everything I can think of but still no proper solution. In brief:

It only seems to occur on a couple of workstations - mostly mine and occasionally one or two others.

Our central files are located on a network file share (Windows Server 2012) - local files are always on the desktop of the workstation

When I get that message, the fix is to reset the network card by disabling/reenabling in Windows control panel. Until I do this I cannot sync to central

Weirdly, the issue is much worse when working directly at the workstation. If I am working from home via remote desktop, I rarely get the message

Initially thinking it was a problem with my workstation, I tried all of the following (and more besides) but nothing worked (1) move the computer to another network socket (2) bought a usb to ethernet adapter (3) tried wifi instead of wired (4) reinstalled windows (5) reinstalled Revit (6) disabled AV...

I got to the point where it was happening up to 8-10 times per day which was really frustrating. Thankfully it was only really affecting me, so I could put up with it and it wasn't affecting other staff. I would periodically get days or even a couple of weeks where it didn't happen at all.

At the time it was at it's worst, I was mainly working on one particularly large workshared project. To try and isolate the issue and see if it was somehow related to the server, I set up a file share on an old computer and moved the central file to this rather than our main server. Magically, I never got the message again when working on that project. However, as soon as I would work on anything stored on the main server, the message would return

I got a new workstation about 6 months ago - partly as a last-ditch effort to see if it was a hardware issue with my previous workstation. All seemed ok initially... then lockdown happened and I worked exclusively at home until we reopened the office in late June.

I have now started getting the same messages on my new computer when working on some (but not all) central files saved to the main server - and (thankfully) nowhere near as ofter as previously... maybe once a week or so. As previously, a reset of the network card resolves and allows me to sync.

I am convinced that it must be some process on the server that is locking the file, but I am none the wiser as to what it might be. Any suggestions would be most welcome to finally put this one to bed!

No solution other than resetting the network card (which is problematic when working remotely!) or offloading the central file to a shared folder not on our main server. It does seem to only happen to certain projects and (thankfully) only on a small number of workstations. Autodesk tech support suggested it might be a corrupt Windows User Profile, but I tried to make a new one and still had the problem. As a workaround when remote working, I created a small batch file that will disable and then re-enable the network card... The commands are:

netsh interface set interface Ethernet disable

netsh interface set interface Ethernet enable
