How to rotate a loaded family in Elevation view plane?

Hi,

I've just got familiar with Revit and am not professional user of this software.

I've made a triangular pyramid model as a family using Component Model in Place and loaded it to a 3d model of a bridge, and located in a right place (West/Eest surface of the bridge). Now the orientation of the trihedral should be matched to the reality, I have the angle between side-planes and the West/East plane of the bridge, and the angle between the base-plane and the horizontal. For making the first one, I defined a reference plane in the one of the floorplan views with a right angle w.r.t the bridge East surface and then pick that reference plane for the trihedral, so you can see the results in the attached pictures (floorplan and east elevation view of the bridge project). But, my issue is orientation of the base plane w.r.t the horizontal. Could anyone of you please advise how I can set this? I attached some pictures to better presentation of my question.

Thanks,

Zahra

Use the Align tool....

pick the base surface you want to align to

pick the surface from your in place model to align to it.

Edit family, check "Work Plane-Based", uncheck "Always vertical".

That way you can either use face or a workplane to place it however you like.

But the issue is I need to change the angle of the colored surface (in the attached image) with respect to the horizontal. The attached image is showing the elevation south view of the family.

Rotation in any of the view angle is not doing what I need.

I must admit that I don't understand what you want to achieve.

Can you upload your family, and image "before" and "after" in clearer context, where "before" shows wrong orientation and "after" showing correct orientation (use image editing software to achieve it if needed).

Hi Mirko,

I'd like to give you more details about this job with more pictures as you requested.

I attached the before and after shapes in elevation West and South views.

Let me clarify my task: I've modelled a family and imported the bridge 3d model which can be seen the results in the image. so, now I need to correct the orientation of the family (the triangle pyramid or tetrahedra) vertically and horizontally based on the orientation information that I have. I have angle between the side-plane of the triangular pyramid with respect to the north for horizontal orientation and the angle between the open triangle face of the triangular pyramid and/or base-plane of the triangular pyramid with respect to the horizontal for vertical orientation. So, for correcting the orientation horizontal orientation, I defined a new reference plane in the floor plan view and then picked that new reference plane for the family, so I made the right angle between the side plane and the north direction and corrected the orientation horizontally (attached image). Now, I need to correct the orientation vertically, and in the attached image you can see how the shape is now (before) and as an example how the correct one with an specified angle with respect to the horizontal should be. Could you advise me how I can do this?

I think if I can define a reference plane which is oriented correctly with respect to the north in floor plan and then is oriented with correct angle with respect to the horizontal, and pick this reference plan for the family, my problem can be solved. Could you advise me if this would be possible?

Many thanks,

Zahra

If you need to rotate family multiple times, around different planes, maybe it's best to create it like this, so you can rotate it into any direction, see my post here:

https://www.engipedia.com/rotate-revit-family-into-any-direction/

Thanks for your time to make this.

Unfortunately, it didn't help.

What do you mean to set the plane/face in which we want to rotate in the adaptive family, how can I do this?

Sorry, if I am asking basic questions, the reason is I am very beginner in Revit with no background in 2D/3D modelling.

Thanks,

Zahra

Please spend 3 minutes of your life by watching the video on this page I sent before:

https://www.engipedia.com/rotate-revit-family-into-any-direction/

All you need to know for this case is shown from 4m00s onwards.

Try to replicate that, and I am sure it will solve your problem.

- place it on a ref plane snd rotate the plane
- set the category to mechanical equipment, tick always verticle box, snd you can rotate it on elevation

OK, thanks, I saw this video before I submit this question, but now I got what you meant, I am working on setting a correct work plane to allow me to rotate on those directions that I need. Could you please let me know why the flip icon which was activate on my original family is deactive in the new adaptive one? I need to do flipping.

Thanks,

Zahra

There is no flip now since your original family is now nested in the adaptive family.

You cannot flip adaptive family, but you can rotate it 180° around any axis.

Thanks Mirko,

I tested to select different faces in the 3d model as a work plane before rotation, but non of them made the rotation w.r.t the horizontal for my 3d family, I guess if I can select the blue plane (attached image) as a work plane, the rotation does the job. Could you please advise me how I can define that plane (which is not non of available faces in the 3d model) as a work plane before rotation?

Regards,

Zahra

I don't make much of it, I usually just draw a simple temporary wall somewhere if I need orthogonal faces that can be used as planes in which to rotate. Wall gives me 3 orthogonal faces (planes) at the same time. But it can be anything with flat faces.

Or, proper way to do it would be to draw reference plane and write Name to the Name parameter. Then you can choose it from the set workplane dropdown.
