Interesting that you just need to be a student, and not necessarily enrolled in a related course. I'll look into that. The local community college here used to have a Revit course that I was going to enroll in, but it's no longer available (maybe because of coronavirus).

I've been watching the video series on LinkedIn Learning. It's too bad they don't have a version of Revit that's watermarked or something that's more freely available for people just trying to learn the software on their own.

online Revit course?

Does anyone know of an online Revit course that would qualify me for a student version of Revit? I'm recently unemployed, and wanted to spend this time to learn a new skill, but I also don't want to spend $300 a month for the software (I'm unemployed and income is an issue, after all). I know there's a 30-day free trial, but from the limited time I've spent with Revit, it's apparent that it'll take me longer than one month to learn it.

Thanks.

You don't need to be taking a Revit course to be eligible for a one-year student license for any Autodesk product, as long as you are enrolled in a qualified educational institution, which is defined pretty broadly:

https://www.autodesk.com/company/terms-of-use/en/general-terms/educational-licensees-additional-terms#qualified

Could you enroll in a course -- any course -- at a local community college for a few hundred dollars? (I can't speak to the permissibility of using the license of a family member already enrolled in a qualified institution, and for which the minimum age is 13.) Then, for instruction, buy a book or take a free Revit course like the very thorough BIMscape series on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/bimscape/playlists.

It sounds as if Autodesk is getting a bit stricter about verifying student status. I received email from Autodesk just today about revised eligibility requirements, as follows:

Autodesk remains committed to providing eligible users and qualified educational institutions with free educational access to its professional products and services.

It used to be that Microstation had a full-featured demo version that would save files and plot and and everything, but would shut off I think every 30 minutes. An architect acquaintance who had just left a big firm to go out on his own got that free version and would simply save the file, exit the program, and start it all back up again every 25 minutes. He used a kitchen timer to keep track. I don't know that he ever bought the program.

The student version of AutoCAD used to be watermarked, and boy what a pain that was. Without rigorous infection control (sound familiar?), it was all too easy to unwittingly insert a block that one of my students had created into one of my commercial DWG's, or one that someone had posted on-line without a warning. I should have just used two separate computers.

So, if you were Autodesk, how would you set things up so that people could legitimately learn on their own, without giving away the product to people using it commercially? Save but not plot? Take the old Microstation route?

its not that simple anymore you actually may need to provide proof you are attending a qualified institution

Save but not plot seems like a good idea, as long as there's a print preview so you could confirm that you know how to set up for printing. But I suppose if you're in a class and you have to turn in work, that could be an issue.

I've heard stories about watermarking causing issues, but it seems like if there's adequate warning that you're about to bring something into your file that isn't valid, that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Having to close and reopen every 30 minutes seems very annoying.

I've created series of videos for my students to use during the lockdown/distance/learning year. You are welcome to check it out. https://youtu.be/UHzuxeJUJRI I cover very basic stuff, but I cover them in detail. The link I provided is just to one of my video. You can browse the channel to find more. But seriously, online learning is no replacement for in-person learning when it comes to learning Revit. There are so many situations that you may run into as a beginner that you will need an in-person support. Once you get better at it, you can utilize Youtube or other online sources to answer specific question that you may have. Good luck

How can I get a student version of Revit without enrolling in a course I have already completed? Currently, I am not working.
