realistic view

Goodmoring,

I have question about realstic view in a family, Revit '21.

I have added an image to make the problem clear,

In Revit 20 when I zoom in I see the material clearly, and in Revit 21 ther is shadow and I can't see the material.

Please help!

Realistic views are different in 2021. Now, the "Realistic" view style combines the material qualities of the realistic view style with the lighting characteristics of the "ray trace" visual style and delivers it in real time to the view display in Revit.

Hi @mtol

Please select the Cast Shadows or Show Ambient Shadows checkbox to manage shadows in the view from the graphic display options.

Then try to move the slider or enter a value between 0 and 100 to change the darkness of the shadows. Cast Shadows must be selected to enable this setting.

Why would you need realistic view within a family? Just for representative purposes of the family itself? In the end you're going to want to use this family in a project, right? Just wondering...

We are furniture wholesale company, we use this familys to render our furniture and it's important how the grain of the wood is to make a realistic image. (As above image).

You could place the families in a project environment, possibly together as a family/object library for your company, and realistically view/show the furniture there...

@martijn_pater We have a libary with 4000+ items, you understand that it is not possible to load everything into a prodject an put al the materials the right way.

If anyone has the solution please let me know.

@mtol That is a lot sure, but in the end all of those are meant for use in a project environment. I wouldn't say it's impossible but definately a lot of work if you have to go through, and fix, all 4000+. But I wouldn't place all 4000+ in one library project file. You probably can make some subcategorizations ie. chairs / tables / table wood / etc.? If I want to load one of your table families into my project I can open the table library file and copy it to the project, it's a common way to do it as far as I know... but come to think of it, to be honest I don't really know if the materials copy along properly... when I figure out a better way to do it I'll get back to you for sure. 😉

There is only one solution. Build your Materials/Assets in a Revit Project "sandbox" and save them to an ADSKLIB which you provide to the end user along with the RFA. That's how many Manufacturer's provide Revit Content. RFA+ADSKLIB. A lot of Manufacturers provide all their Revit Families and Materials together in one RVT. I've never see one with 4000 products though. In fact, I don't even know of a Manufacturer who produces 4000 products -- especially furniture makers.

@barthbradley Okay, so we have to go back to revit '20, and then when we finish the item we need to convert it to '21?...

Please check our website www.eichholtz.com we have 85% of our items in 3d. So 4000+ items.

I don't know how this relates to the tread topic, or what I last posted about -- which was about creating a separate ADSKLIB file containing the your Products' "Realistic View" Materials. Again: this would need to be done in the PROJECT environment because Realistic/Render is not possible in the Family Environment. The ADSKLIB file and the RFA file are separate and distinct files.

Okay thank you, but this is not what i ment. please take a look at this items:

These 8 different items have approx 20 different materials. We have a ADSKLIB libary in the projects, but we also have a libary in the family with the materials that are on the family items. But this is not the problem, the problem is that in Revit 20 we could see the materials in realstic (see image below)

And in Revit '21 we can't see the materials we only see shadows on realistic:

Post something we can test on our end. Set up and Save some Realistic Views in 2020 and 2021 Families and Projects, and then post those RFAs and RVTs here. If this issue is only happening with specific custom Materials in your ADSKLIB file, then post your ADSKLIBs as well.

We think it's because of the improved rendering appearence, if we dont use this then you see the material correct, if we use it you so't see the material correct?

I emailed Autodesk about it and they said this about it:

'I spoke with the Developers on this and they are aware of the fact that the new Realistic View requires improvements in Family Editor as it uses its own lightning that cannot be controlled, and this is currently their top priority for a future Fix.'

Yes, I'm aware of this. This is what I was trying to explain to you above. In fact, I lead off this thread posting Links about this. But still, I don't understand why this is such a big deal. You are creating furniture content to be used in a Revit Project. As an end-user of your content - or anybody's content - I couldn't care less about the content's Realistic appearance in the Family environment.

Just saying.
