Revit profile ownership

Hi All,

Someone might have asked before but I haven't found a good answer for it.

At our company we use work-sharing in the server. As we are an architecture and interior design company we treat both models as different disciplines. What we have noticed is sometimes, even if we are not working on the architects model but have their models linked to ours, they will get a message on their model that something they are trying to edit is locked under someone's else from the ID team even if they didn't touch that model.

Did someone come across that? is that to do with the linked model for some reason?

I just have the email that the architect sent to us saying that the XX person needed to relinquish elements in the model, hence she has never worked on it nor has opened it.

This is not the first time that this happens. My profile has been locked in a model that I have never opened when I started to work here and I never found a good reasonable answer for it.

there are many reasons for that. but in order to overcome that, you can detach and save the file to the same file path.

If you are using File-based worksharing (not Revit Server or Revit Cloud Models/BIM 360), this could be caused by changes in the Shared Coordinates. The Publish Coordinates command will make changes to the associated link, and this will require that you take ownership of elements within the linked model (even if you’ve never opened the link directly).

Unfortunately we can't do that as we need to use the architects linked model live as they are doing changes that we need to be aware in real time.

That is quite intriguing as we Pin the linked models on our end. Or is this something that happens in the main architects model and if we don't reload might than lock that on ours because of the misread information? Does that make sense?

You can absolutely do that. The link has nothing to do with detaching from central. In fact, detaching from central is a part of regular model maintenance for some and a useful problem solving tool for many.

We do that for archiving. But in our team we need the model live meaning if I detach and repath the link then we need to do that more than 5 times a week. and that is not efficient for the fast path we work.

Yes, you are misunderstanding. It's "detach from central", not detach the link. In Revit, links get "removed".

Rob if I detach from central then is not a live model anymore and we need that live to get the updates. Sorry for me is not making any sense what you are proposing as a solution.

and how do you explain the fact that we had a project that I never opened before or even worked in a model that has a link related to that model and my user profile got locked with ownership in that model? Must be a glitch in Revit when working with work sharing in the local server as we don't use BIM 360 or cloud based models.

This is what I'm trying to understand how can someone have ownership in a model that has never been open by that user profile.

Detaching from central is not a suggestion to leave it that way. You need to resave as central afterwards. This process will relinquish any ownership errors.

I'm not offering any explanation as I simply do not know but I do know how to fix the error.

Again, I have no idea how it happened for you but I've seen it happen in more than one scenario. Most recently it happened when I had ownership of a workset in a linked model.

When the Publish Coordinates command is used, the position of the Survey Point is changed in the lined model. It wouldn't matter if the link is pinned.

One avenue of investigation into this behavior would be to track down the specific element(s) that ownership has been taken on.

Does anyone know of any other reasons this could happen? We have started to see this in our office a handful of times and it makes no sense...

We do mechanical detailing and often split our jobs into one Ductwork, one Plumbing, and one Mechanical Piping model. We then link the models into each other so we can all coordinate together in real time.

We will get an error like "Ductwork Modeler" has ownership of the Plumbing model and needs to relinquish. They have never opened the model, and never needed to.

Is there some way that Revit is making a change to a model that is linked without ever opening it?

Has ownership of "Plumbing model" or "Plumbing model elements" ?

Where the workset all released after the models were split and the new central was created?

We often encounter this issue. We do mechanical and plumbing. On bigger projects we separate the plumbing to it's own file and have the duct and mech pipe in one file with all the other reference files linked in. I'm trying to determine if this is a Trimble Sysque issue or a Revit issue. I will get errors when I sync because someone else deleted and item they just recently drew on another workset that I have not touched. It seems like the duct detailers get the error with the pipe fittings drawn. I have found that the sync goes through in spite of the errors
