Thanks for your input. Indeed, it is normally a later phase of construction, but think of it this way: the concrete structure is already built, and in my project I will work on an existing structure as opposed to a blank canvas. So, in my project there is really only one phase (new construction, which includes strengthening of some existing columns). I can model them as another Column Type, but I am thinking of expanding this further to more complex shapes and situations of strengthening, so it would be really helpful if this was a new family. As I described in my original post, ideally the user would pick the column and the jacket would be built around it in Revit with a predefined thickness. Any ideas?

I need to create a concrete jacketing family to strengthen existing concrete columns in my Revit model. Ideally, I would pick the host column, and the jacket would be built around it with a specified thickness along the entire length of the column. Any idea how to achieve this? Thanks a lot!

To strengthen "existing" concrete columns? Sounds to me like these "concrete jackets" would be applied in a later phase of construction. If this is the case, why not just model them as another Column Type?

Just do it in the BIM world the same way you would in the real world. Place the strengthening apparatus around the column. Two separate jobs.

Thanks but that is not sufficient in my case. It works, but my strengthening shapes will be more complex than a rectangle, and I will add more properties and controls to this family in the future. So, I would really like to know if what I am asking is possible or not in Revit, and if it is possible, I would like to know how to get started and what to look for.

Almost sounds like you don't and you're wanting Revit to fabricate something on its own without any programming.

Create a new column family that is hollow in the middle with parameters to control the size (shape of existing column) then you can drive the wrapping thickness with some ref planes.

Then you can just place this at the same locations of the existing columns.

If your shapes are more complicated, not square, you may want to just look at using walls and wrapping the columns.
