Handrails

Hi Guys,

New to trying to modelling handrails and keen to get any advice before I take the plunge.

I usually model plants so know my way around REVIT a bit but not architectural things like handrails.

I would like to model this:

Any tips/links to a good tutorial etc would be gratefully received.

Those are some useful links/tutorials with regards to railings, although your example seems rather straightforward with ootb railing functionality. You could also find some examples using piping systems for railing structures actually, never seen tutorials for those though...

edit: Perhaps specify more clearly what you need to know, since the above is a rather generic answer...

Here is a manufacturer railing you can use as sample. To edit the top railing, press tab and select the railing. Edit the railing and you can customized the end conditions to suit what you need

If you want remove middle picket, simple set the none.

Result is closer to what you want.

So I had a play with that railing and managed to do a few things as you will see below.

I'm struggling though to get it all in round, vertical rails removed with just a top rail and double bottom rail. I also don't need any base plates.

Thoughts please?

That requires you to modify the baluster post family. Not sure if you are able to modify it yourself. I've attached sample so you can practice on your own.

Thanks but I can't change the
alignment of the posts or get
rid of the top brackets. I
can get the rails as required.
Maybe I should be looking at
simple tubes with welded
connections. I don't know how
to do that either.

If you want simple one, you can use the default Revit template and use 900mm rail. Duplicate it and you can adjust the placement. See attached

Can this simple method also do rails at a slope for stairs and ramps?

Edit sketch and set (parts of) sketchlines to slope in ribbon... or set sloped floor as host.

One last question, I haven't found out how to get the posts to be equal distance between end posts. Any ideas please? That should wrap it up then.

If you want post to be equal distance, change the post to spread to fit and make sure you choose truncated pattern.

Equal Spacing done!

Just getting into some of the details now. I have balustrades extending past the corner/end posts, a strange offset at the corners and I would like to introduce a gap with a smaller post just under the top balustrade. See below.

Railing will break if you have uneven surface like topography. If you have simple slope like floor slab, you wouldn't run into that problem. As for baluster, you may want to create baluster family and replace it. I've attached sample you can learn how to create it.

I still have the weird setdown at the corners and I do believe that I have a simple floor and no topography.

I also have the rails sticking out a bit at the end/corner posts.

Do you have a solution/family for escutcheons to finish of at the floor please?
