Generic Model Two Level Based Family - Geometry Won't Instantiate in a Project

Disclaimer: The geometry for my family was imported from ACAD.

The family I created - see attached - seems to function appropriately on it's own. However, when I load it into a project I can't place an instance of any of the family types. When I try, I get error messages stating the shape offsets cannot be maintained. Only if the upper reference level in the family and the project are the same elevation can I place an instance of a family type. If they don't match, or if one is changed after the fact, the error messages appear. I'd like the geometry to move with the upper reference level if the upper reference level elevation changes, and I'd like the geometry to move to the appropriate alternate reference level if the upper reference level parameter is changed for an instance of the family. The family does not work properly.

First, I don't understand why you have used this template with two levels. Second, you have created a "free form element" from your imported CAD objects. In the process, you created some reference planes in the side views, constrained with dimensions. If you lower the height of the upper level, you will see that these objects are left behind. That causes an error when you try to place this family into a project.

Solutions: delete those additional reference planes and dimensions that you see in the left view after lowering the level.

Better: Start over. Use a simpler template, line-based, and use a profile family and create a sweep solid.

It's an oddly built family. Why a 2-level Template? I would just use a Generic Model Template and place the component on the Ref. Level.

Your profile is too thin. Even if I want to recreate the profile, it won't let me create those lines. Revit has limit of 1/32" for details and 1/16" for model. Even if you set that profile to 1/32", it won't create it.

Try this Family. It's Work Plane-Based. Uses your original geometry. Seems to work like a charm.
