REVIT + Nvidia Drivers

Hi there,

this is a general question for anyone using Revit in conjunction with an Nvidia GPU and the associated drivers.

Are you seeing a spike in the GPU clock while using Revit?

I use MSI Afterburner as a means of keeping an eye on GPU performance (temp. / clock rate) but never for overclocking.

With the last few Nvidia driver releases, i have been noticing that the card (1080Ti) is clocking up to load levels - as though i were gaming or rendering - when using Revit & Autocad. This is just in normal everyday usage of the programs, no rendering or anything in the background, and happens even by simply opening an empty file with no geometry at all modelled. Curiously enough, this does NOT happen when using other similar programs like 3DS Max or Sketchup.

This is not normal behaviour. Im currently using driver 466.47 and everything is working as it should in regard to the GPU clock, however every driver update after that one (and even the one before it) are making the card behave abnormally when using these 2 products.

I have posted this to the Nvidia forum but i think their main concern is related to gaming performance

Has anyone else noticed this on their machines?

Just a random idea: can you install only the Revit-approved driver (probably an older driver) and observe the same behavior? Does it up-clock only for seconds, or for extended period of time?

Does it feel different (faster, slower) with the new drivers than with the old drivers?

What driver version is causing the issue?? Did you check the readings of the GPU on windows built in Performance monitor? Issue could also be MSI Afterburner related

Autodesk has certain drivers tested others not but even those tested versions do cause graphic issues from time to time.

im currently using an older driver (466.47), though not that old though really, and the up-clocking does not occur

every driver released since that one has the same up-clocking bug

i'm quite diligent when it comes to keeping an eye on GPU performance with Afterburner and this is very much new behaviour

it stays consistently up as long as im using either Revit or Autocad, goes back down to normal clocks when i close the programs

doesn't necessarily feel faster or slower (didnt really use it for long enough to say, once i noticed it i quit out and rolled the drivers back) but i can certainly hear the GPU fans revving up as though i were gaming or rendering

so im on driver 466.47 at the moment and it works as it should, but every driver since that one (466.77, 471.11, 471.48, 471.68) all have the same bug where the GPU clocks up to around 1800+MHz when Revit or Autocad are open

i did check GPU readings in the windows performance monitor, and they were showing it reaching 50+% which is way above normal for such basic desktop work. For example, im currently at work on my office machine also using an older driver (461.92) and i have 500+mb file open, navigating around it in a 3D view and the GPU (also a 1080) isnt breaking 20% - I've also got an episode of The Expanse running on another monitor, just for kicks.

However with these newer drivers all i have to do is open Revit or Autocad and the GPU races up as though i were gaming or rendering, no other programs or even screens turned on.

I had thought that maybe it could be an Afterburner thing, but then ive never once used it for overclocking and the problem occurs with some drivers and not others

I just downloaded the 471.68 on this laptop's Quadro RTX 4000 ... no issues so far reading isn't exceeding 30% navigating an 800Mb model in realistic display 3D views

Edit: Playing a Walkthrough and Rendering @ 300dpi High recorded some spikes up to 59% (Should have bench marked the previous version now I cant compare)

do you have any diagnostic program akin to Afterburner (eg. CPUID) where you can see the actual clock rate of the card? According to the internet, your base clock should be 1005MHz and your boost 1545MHz.

My 1080 Ti has a base of 1544MHz, and on driver 466.47 it never exceeds this. With the last bunch of drivers though it ramps up to 1800+ which is gaming or rendering levels

the different card could give different results, yours being the better card for the task, but then if the problem lies with the specific driver + program combination that shouldn't make a difference (should it.....?)

that would a real-time rendering walkthrough yeh? If so then i would think that up-spike to be normal

i assume you're also using the studio driver and not the game ready one?
