The same way that CADmep Fabrication does?

We should be able to design, coordinate and spool plumbing and mechanical piping without the need for a 3rd party plug-in.

Thanks for posting. Development is aware of this and is looking into ways of changing this feature. Here's a few links that talk abut this.

At this time, the existing RIF functionality should be used to convert and map a Revit design model
that uses Revit families to a Fabrication CADmep model using ITM. As always, limitations of the
original design model will determine the integrity of the converted model.
Once converted, the Revit Extension for Fabrication software add-in can be used to import the
.MAJ file back into an empty Revit project.

Thanks, But I was asking about being able to use native .ITM files in Revit and then be able to spool the same way that CADmep Faberication does.

Using the conversion method is one thing that keep most from using revit for MEP Coordination as there is no way to produce what out fab shops need.

I realize this post is a couple years old but am researching this process right now. Revit 2018 now has a workaround to export to a .pcf file which our pipe fab shop can utilize in Acorn to send to the pipe cutting machines http://blogs.autodesk.com/revit/2017/07/26/exporting-pcf-files-from-revit/ I've tried it and it's a pretty easy process to use.

There's also a relatively inexpensive spooling Add-In Victaulic has been working on with Autodesk I'll be looking into more:

Does anyone have any experience in these tools yet and any advice to share? I wish Revit would have had this 3 years ago when a division in our company went to Solidworks based solely on the export functionality to the shop.
