How to save nested family edits back to parent family?

I can change nested families and see that they have been updated, however i cant get the changes back into the parent family doc. Do i need to do this...

1. make changes to nested family parameters

2. load the changes into the parent parentFamily.loadfamily(nestedFamily)

3. save the parent?
