First steps in Recap

I just received 3d scan of house and I am wondering is it possible to generate 2d drawing form point cloud? Another question is how to change view to realsitic one (I mean photos which were taken during scanning)?

hi @Anonymous,

Currently the workflow for creating 2D drawings based on your pointcloud would be to import the point cloud into another software like Autocad, Revit, or Civil3D and then create elements aka trace the pointcloud to make for instance, Revit walls.

For structured scan data there is a mode called "RealView" this lets you enter a photo-real view from the scanners perspective, you can then switch between "mirrorballs" that represent the various scan locations (if there are multiple scans in your single project)

Realview mode, if available can be found on the bottom of ReCap application in the same menu as Window, Distance, and Limit Box.

thank you a lot for your reply! May I ask one more question? Is it a ReCap Pro (screenshot you sent)? I'm afraid that I didn't see this option in this one I have.

hi @Anonymous,

no problem! I was using ReCap PRO yes, but the tool should be available in the non PRO version as well, assuming that your data is Structured. You can identify whether the data is structured or unstructured when you import the scans. Please review this article for Importing Scan Files

Pay careful attention to the symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the scan data (see image below)

If it is structured data, you should have the option for "realview" mode, if it is unstructured then you will not.

@Anonymous - in most cases you don't want to create technical drawings directly from a point cloud. The real world is rarely straight, level, square, and/or plumb, while drawings are almost always an idealized state i.e. objects are perfectly straight and level (or vertical), connections are always at 90 degrees, lengths are always a rational number, and so on.

Chances are in the process of documenting the real world situation you'll have to make a number of judgment calls to create a workable drawing. For example, a simple door frame may have been pushed a degree or so out of plumb, and be a bit wider at the bottom than the top; in real life it swings shut on it's own and sticks a bit. On the drawing you're more than likely going to just drop in an industry standard door object, perfectly vertical so it can be easily dimensioned, reported, and updated at some future point.

I know about these thing-it's why we did 3d scanning, we have to do very precise interior project and know exactly where we have to straighten walls etc... So I am lookin for the best way to use this scan to make a project in BIM programme.
