@Anonymous

I've messaged the development team, I've checked myself and it looks like it defaults to 3 backups. I've checked the reg-keys and settings and it appears that there are no options to either set the auto-save frequency of the backups or change the number of saves. If the engineers say any different, I will let you know.

As for the original alignment issue with the groups, by chance, did you employ the use of survey points in those groups? You could re-adjust using survey points if you did, you can take a target reading and note the x,y,z values and then set a survey point and manually enter in a desired value for one of coordinate values and the survey point will force a re-alignment. Are all the groups supposed to be on the same level as well? If so - then either the x or the y axis with the z axis should correct this. I often correct level errors by forcing the z-axis to shift using survey points.

I've asked the devs for potential root causes.

So i've scanned a 6 story building, about a hundred scans in total..

registered everything perfectly, things line up super nice

then i realize "i should group my scans, so i can turn them on and off to give me controls in what i'm seeing"
Soooo i sit there and group things, rename the groups such as "basement" and "1st floor" and "roof" and "exterior"

And then I go to 3D and each of those groups has decided "screw you Rob, we're going to tilt each group in different directions!"

AND I CAN'T UNDO IT!!!

Am i seriously going to have to start over?

the backup file(s) are comically USELESS

there was no undo

there was NO REASON for this to happen

If i look a the building in section, one group/floor is now tilted some random angle one way

the next group/floor is tilted in a COMPLETELY different direction with no rhyme or reason

they all go in crazy directions

what did i do wrong?!?

how can i revert to the state of my project/file from a few hours ago? I've been looking for solutions and can't find anything, and i'm HOSED if i have to rebuild this **** registration...

Not impressed right now... borderline pissed off!

@Anonymous

I am sorry to hear that you have ran into such a frustrating issue here. I'd be happy to help you out with this. You can in fact restore the project from a back-up, see:

How to load a backup file in ReCap Pro

Going off just what I can see in the screenshot and your description, I often see misalignment if one or more scans in the group or project doesn't connect well with it's neighbors, either low overlap or very low balance can trigger this (happens often if connecting a scan taken in a narrow corridor or confined space is stitched to another scan but the balance/overlap being so restricted it can't establish a good alignment). See also: Changing the position of scans wrongly aligned during the registration process in ReCap.

In registration you can check the scans for the scan producing the misalignment, the quality report should show one or more of the fields in the red while it's neighboring scans are all in the green, that would be the scan that triggered the misalignment in that specific group.

Scott,

thanks for the info, however, i had all those working perfectly fine, aligned NICELY. All six floors perfectly done

Then I thought about combining my scans into groups by floor for easier management/visibility stuff. Easily turn on and off different floors by the group instead of having to manually turn off each indibividual scan

And that's when each floor went CRAZY
I wasn't even aligning scans anymore, they'd already been registered and aligned nicely, it's strictly when i went to group them.

As for the backups... I found that post, but it only had 3 backups, and for some bonkers reason they were saved minutes apart from each other (not even from my own "save") it seems like it saves stuff automatically.

So.. with that...

1) why would putting my scans into groups, NOT ALIGNING THEM, screw up their alignments?

and

2) is there a way to increase the number of backups?

thanks again!

I am waiting on some feedback as to how else to prevent or correct it (other than using survey points to force alignment).

As for the backups - the engineers did confirm that there isn't any way to manually set the number or frequency of the backup saves. They said that a safe way to go about it is prior to making the group, do a manual re-save (I'd recommend under a different name so it has its own backups).

I will let you know what else they say about correcting the alignment.

no, i didn't play with the XYZ of the scans.

not to sound repetitive, but it all went haywire like that image shows once i grouped my scans. And I didn't notice it happening while doing that grouping effort. And as soon as i noticed I went digging for the backups but that didn't serve me any use sadly cause they'd all been updated to this new jacked up version within minutes of each other due to the auto-savings.

Each level had it's own group. So i had named them "Basement" "1st Floor" "2nd Floor" ... "Roof" "Exterior"

I've since rebuild the whole thing, but goodness that was frustrating

I do have have a bunch of other questions to and will be at AU in a few weeks. Is there someone there (maybe yourself?) that can be recommended to talk with about ReCap?

@Anonymous

I taught at AU last year but I couldn't attend this year, I had other personal events that conflicted with timing of setting up courses.

We do have the AU app that you can use to match you to instructors and other product experts at Autodesk that will also be attending. I can check and see who will be doing any ReCap instruction this year.

I think it may be a good idea then that I go ahead and log an internal feature improvement request to ask that we allow for greater control of the backups - such as save frequency and number of saves.
