topic I guess there is no way to import 3D CAD Model to Recap Pro, isn't it? in ReCap Forum

My goal is to compare and try fitting the alignment between the 3D CAD Model and Point Cloud data.

I figured that Recap Pro is one of the ideal solutions for it.

So I researched about importing 3D CAD Model into Recap Pro, but I was not successful thus far.

I tried the suggestion of downloading NWC Export Utility and use it to export the .dwg file to .nwc, but I couldn't find the option to save or export the CAD model to .nwc file. in my AutoCAD 3D and Navisworks. None of them supported this feature even after installing the utility.

I searched similar questions, and this was the only answer I found through Autodesk community, which didn't work out in the end. I don't know what other ways I can make use of CAD model on Recap Pro, is there really no way out of this?

Thanks.

If you have Navisworks (Simulate or Manage) and a license for it, you do not need the "NWC Export Utility".

What would be the point of that?

An NWC (NavisWorks Cache) is always created when you load a CAD model into Navisworks. The only software that can work with such a NWC file is Navisworks.

What you were probably suggested to do is:

Load your 3D CAD model(s) into Navisworks (Simulate or Manage NOT Freedom!)

Export a NWD file (Navisworks calls it "publish")

Attach this NWD in your ReCap Pro Project

You can now see the 3D CAD model within the 3D bubble views

But if your goal is "to compare and try fitting the alignment between the 3D CAD Model and Point Cloud data." then you are needlessly complicating things.

Do it in Navisworks (Simulate or Manage):

Load your 3D CAD model(s)

Append your RCP or RCS pointcloud

You can now navigate and compare both within Navisworks.

Or do it in AutoCAD (NOT LT!)

Open your 3D CAD model

Attach your RCP or RCS pointcloud (either via the Xref Manager or use the command POINTCLOUDATTACH)

You can now navigate and compare both within AutoCAD.
