Problem with Update Origin

I am trying to update my scan project which appears to have registered with a slight angle. I have used the 'Update Origin' tool within recap multiple times trying to better understand how it works. I am selecting points that make up the floor surface but the origin 'gizmo' is forcing the z-axis to remain perfectly vertical instead of the slight (~3 degreee?) skew necessary to correct the scan. Any ideas would be appreciate

hello form Spain Jrostar

You can update and modify your Z axis in ReCap.

But beware of this: when you specify a direction think that you have to specify a NORMAL VECTOR to a surface. This means that when you are setting the proper Z direction you must select the horizontal plane, the floor, the pavement or some equivalent.

The solution could be:

- Select the icon "update origin"
- Press "tab" to skip setting origin and jump to setting Z direction.
- Select an HORIZONTAL PLANE, like the floor or the pavement. Then your Z axis will be updated to be orthogonal or normal to that plane.

Regards.

What you described is what I have tried and the expected workflow.

However, when I select points in the HORIZONTAL PLANE of the floor slab, the angle of the z-axis does not update. It sticks straight up despite the floor slab being at an angle when viewed from a section view

I was wondering if you have tried adding survey point to possibly get a better result. I would suggest to place several points on the floor, distributed across the dataset, setting all Z=0 or some constant value and see if that works with what you are trying to do.

Just to be clear... the proposed solution is to create a survey file with a series of x, y & z points and then 'assign' them to points within the recap model?

Since I did not shoot the project with targets and relied on the scan to scan registration, I do not have clear targets to 'pick' and assign survey points to. I do not think this workflow will work since I am not simply bringing the floor into flatness but I need to rotate the entire scan set together so walls, floors & ceilings all square up properly.

I will attempt the 'update origin' tool again to see if I can get Recap to 'see' the floor plane

Attached is a screen grab so you can see the process I am trying...

You can see the angle of the scan

I activate the Update Origin command and select the floor slab. I believe the angle is too close to 'flat' for it to work properly

You can see when I select a wall, it 'flips' the origin but when I pick the floor slab again it goes back to ortho instead of aligned with the slab to match the angle. I have tried putting the origin at the 'high' point in the angled slab and picking the 'low' point but still no luck. Is anyone seeing anything wrong with my attempted workflow?

I was able to stumble my way through the problem... Ultimately here is how it was fixed (with help from Anil)

Placing a series of Survey Points where I kept the X & Y values the same, but changed the Z value to 0. You may notice this was suggested previously, however there was little clarity provided in HOW this was done...

1- Enter Project Registration Mode

2- Enter a Scan's 'RealView'

3- Select a point on the floor slab

4- Click 'Create Survey Point'

5- Copy & paste the X & Y values from the point information above into the Survey Point information below

6- Set the Z value to 0

7- Label the Survey Point (I did simple numerical order... 1, 2, 3, etc)

8- Click 'Save'

9- Make sure the Green Dot in ReCap turns to a different symbol with the label you gave it

10- Repeat for as many survey points as you need

It was originally suggested to place 3 points. This was not enough for my scan data set. I placed 6 spread out at the various edges of the scan data and had good success. I hope this helps someone else!
