Hi @Anonymous,

I got an update from development team saying that user manipulation of files in the support folder is an unsupported activity and not part of any recommended workflow. At this time we will not be able to provide specifics detail regarding the contents of the files in the support directory, nor provide any guarantee that they will stay constant version to version. This workflow is not something we can currently support.

Thank you and have a great day!!!

FILES IN THE SUPPORT FOLDER

Hi,

I have been playing with the files which are in the support folder to be able to split some recaps up into different files.

So what I have done is:

1 - I have a recap file with 20 scans and I want to create a new one with only 7 of them.

2 - I create a new empty recap file with exactly the same name.

3 - I copied all the rcs and rcc files for my seven scans in the new and empty support folder.

4 - Finally, I import those rcs file (which are in the support folder) in my recap.

5 - I wait until the program finishes updating the data and save.

6 - I close and open again and the mirror balls appear in the plan view.

The result is what I want. I have a recap with only seven scans and mirror balls.

My question is: What are all the other files? (.thumbnail, .temp16, .temp27, .diff, .llt) Could someone write a brief description of what those files are doing? They don't get re-generated after you open the file again. The rcs contains the point cloud data so it is important and the rcc has something to do with the mirror balls, but what about the rest?

Thank you!

Regards,

Almu

You can avoid the whole thing by changing your workflow.

1) start a new project with a new name

2) import the 7 RCS files from the original project into this new project, skip registration

Now, there will be almost nothing in the support folder of the new project, as it uses the files from the support folder of the original project

3) save as the new project onto another drive

Now, all needed files (and nothing more) will be in the support folder on the other drive.

Hi Patrick, thank you for you answer.

Why into a new drive? This is what is confusing. Is all this process written somewhere in a tutorial or online? Or is it the way you figure it out?

Thank you

Almu

I found out by experience that

- if you do a save as on the same folder or drive, the save is very fast but the imported RCS files stay in the original Support folder.

this is handy to make a quick backup just before you want to try something with in the Project

- if you do a save as on another drive, the save as takes longer but performs a copy of all files into a new support folder.

So this is what i always do when the project is finished.

Also I did find out that if you move or rename a complete project with the windows explorer (RCP file + Suppor folder)

and then you want to attach this project in Navisworks, you need to resolve the new name or path for each RCS file.

If you do a Save as from within Recap (to an UNC path), Navisworks can attach without any error messages.

I will give it a try.

Even though I still think all those funny procedures should be officially shared with the users by Autodesk...

Thank you!!!

Almudena
