It is useful to create multiple regions in a single point cloud to turn them on and off like layers in both AutoCAD and Revit.
It is not simply about selecting a planer area.
I have used regions in Revit to show both Existing and Proposed conditions. For example.
I have an existing building with an existing pipe manifold and Pump. I have created regions for the existing pump and existing piping. In Revit, I have sheets that show the existing pump and piping manifold. And in the same revit file I turn off the existing pump and piping manifold regions and display the proposed pump and piping manifold. Depending on the needs for the project one might many regions to turn on or off. I have another point cloud project where there are 4 different pumps in two rooms. It would have been nice to create regions for each of the pumps and each of the 4 corners where the pumps & pump manifolds reside. If you only have 1 - 4 regions the point cloud does not seem to have too much of a performance hit. When you go beyond this the regions seem to have a dramatic hit of performance in ReCap.
Regions cause Slow performance?

Man, Recap is killing me. In each scan project, I just created a few scan regions to make it easier to isolate and freeze/thaw the site fencing, electrical equipment, and everything outside of the project site. Even this simple amount of manipulation had a drastic effect on performance, making the program barely usable. The performance issue is carried through to AutoCAD as well. An exported Unified RCS file works much better in AutoCAD, but it takes hours to export from Recap and you lose the functionality of the regions. Any thoughts?

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for participating in our Community!!! Do you know what version of ReCap you are using? Current version is 4.2.1.7. Please, try following tips to improve this behavior:

Use more regions instead of putting a lot of selections into one region. The performance majorly depends on how many selections you have made instead of how many regions you have. Splitting big regions into smaller ones will help to improve the performance especially when you want to lock / hide that region, i.e. make regions to be locked / hidden contain fewer selections.

Although plane selection is very useful to select points, it scarifies some performance since plane boundary can be as big as project boundary, which spans more area compared to use rectangle selection with limited bounding box.

Keeping your selection as tight as possible to include only the points you want to select also helps to improve performance.

Please, let me know if this helps.

Thank you and have a great day!

So, just to clarify, If I have a large room and I am putting wall selections into a region. It is better to put each wall in its own region, rather than putting all of the walls into one region? I completely locked up a file because I put all 4 walls (100'x100') into one region. Also, why is hiding a region hogging performance? That seems like the opposite effect of freezing a layer in AutoCAD.

I believe Autodesk has looked into this issue and has developed an update that helps this process. The recommended workflow would include NOT HIDING any layers. What you should do is start at the very bottom of your room/area, isolate the most bottom (I usually move my clipping/section box up about 6" at a time depending how crowded the space is), then layer your point cloud as you move up. So Create your 00-Floor layer, 01-Wall layer, 02-Columns layer, etc, and use the select tool to layer each part of your point cloud.

Once you have finished layering the point cloud in that bottom section, make your section box visible, grab the bottom of the box and drag it up, creating another increment section. This is ultimately hiding the point cloud you've already categorized, but doesnt bog down your computer/Recap.

This is NOT a solution response. The workflow is correct and has been confirmed to be the suggested workflow but only until all Layering/Regioning has been complete. The problem starts to take effect once all layering is complete and you try to export any Unified RCS or RCP. I have found that the PTS option has been a success but utilizing this in the model is hard as it doesn't show any features/shading differentials (aka you can't tell what that point cloud portion is). I have tried exporting/opening on two computers, both processing capacities provided below, AND the latest version on Recap Pro, still no success.

Processing PowerLayered Point Cloud (not bogging down yet)

They should not have accepted as solution then. I changed my work flow. I created a new project and import the rcs file. Instead of creating region, I choose delete points and overwrite the file. There will be a prompt asking to removed points. It is faster than my previous workflow. From 5 hours now down to an hour only. BTW I just need to remove the equipment from the point cloud so I don't to classify all the points.

Your screenshots show that your Xeon uses only one core (6% of 16 cores) just like your laptop (26% of 4 cores).

But your laptop still packs a higher Single-Thread-Performance, although your Xeon-Tower was probably more expensive.

Opening Projects and Exporting Scan Regions are apparently not the kind of problems that can be easily parallelized.

Maybe they aren't even parallelizable, i don't know. But for now the Single-Thread prowess of your computer is key.

See this other Thread (which is also newer) "Best Computer Hardware Specs for Recap (Pointcloud)"

As @marlance mentioned, adapting your workflow to reduce computation time is possible.

Especially if you delete points. See the documentation for the ol' Shrink-N-Burn.

The more Clippings, Scan Regions and un-removed deleted points there are, the more computations have to be done, the more sluggish your ReCap behaves. Because ReCap has to compute which Points to display and which to omit.

Best of luck to both of you....

Are other users satisfied that this thread is listed as the solution? Not being able to use regions or having to make many of them just to keep the application from slowing down does not seem like a solution. I have tried this on many projects and it doesn't seem to help. Once you do enough cleanup of points onto regions, Recap becomes useless.

This is a major setback. How are users supposed to cleanup scan data without this feature working? When scanning buildings, there is a lot of point data captured thru glass, and from other reflective surfaces that must be eliminated before using the scan data in an effective way. There seems to be no workable way to do this in Recap at this time. A real fix to this performance issue is needed. This needs to be top priority.

Jumping in a little late here, but let me see if I understand this correctly. The more regions I create, the more calculations Recap has to perform to determine what to display. And the solution is to create fewer regions, not use plane selection type, and instead use the limit box as much as possible to hide points?

That doesn't really seem like a solution. My understanding of the desired workflow is make regions in Recap, then bring the point cloud into autocad and use the regions to control visibility. Seems fundamentally based on creating a bunch of regions in Recap. Am I missing something?

Yeah, that sums it up.

I'm having trouble understanding the implications of this. Is this suggesting that the selection process is also being saved into the RCP and adding to the slowness?

I use Plane selection a lot. I never thought the selection method would have any negative effect.
