Project origin Recap question

Has anyone an idea how to find the exact coordinates of the project project origin? The only way I can find so far is by hovering over the origin in update origin mode. It doesn't seem very accurate. I need to insert it accurately into revit.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean - after registration, ReCap really only has one coordinate system. That system can be changed with the Update Origin tool. Are you asking for the XYZ of the current origin without any changes you made using that tool?

To inset a point cloud into Revit using origin to origin I need the exact co-ordinates of the point cloud location in recap and its orientation. Otherwise I'm unable to find it in plan view in revit. Having a revit model in accurate coordinates is an important part of the project.

Just to add. The idea is to move the revit project base point to these coordinates to view the point cloud for tracing.

So you need to visually see where 0,0,0 is in ReCap, so you can find the same point/coordinate in Revit?

Not exactly. If you click update origin, a yellow dot appears in a random point in the point cloud, this is the project origin point. To place and find the Point cloud in revit I need the coordinates and orientation of the origin to set up the revit model. The origin point is based on real world coordinates but unlike an autocad object I can't right-click on it and find its location in properties. Right now I'm guessing and losing the point cloud upon insertion into revit.

That's where I'm confused. The yellow dot doesn't appear at a random location, it always and only appears at ReCap's 0,0,0.

Maybe we have a difference in our point cloud insertion methods😄Mine comes in aligned to the local coordinate system with the origin at project center. It's been pre registered in cyclone, then cleaned up in recap. The problem is when transferring to revit and maintaining the exact coordinates.

Sadly (or gladly) finished work for the day. I'll try to pop something up tomorrow. As I said I just need the origin location and orientation to locate the point cloud in Revit. Recap doesn't seem to give a straightforward point cloud location. I'm using a workflow based on a YouTube video here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_CJC0dTvmR4

Thank you for participating in our Community! Is your Revit model in shared coordinate or Internal Coordinate? If you trying to align ReCap model with Revit model then you need to set-up your coordinate system when creating project (same coordinate as Revit). Also, you can manual align ReCap Model in AutodCAD and then insert into Revit model. Please, let me know if this helps.

Apologies, I have been away from my desk for a couple of days on survey duty. As far as I know I am using a shared co-ordinate system i.e. it is a definate suveyed system that the cyclone point cloud, the recap model and the (hoped for) Revit model will have. Maybe I've misinterpreted the concept (I am about 8 years away from Revit).

Basically my end goal is to take a Recap model and locate and view it in Revit for modeling purposes. A revit model is required for renovation purposes but needs to be at the same cordinates as the current structure. I posted a few days ago on this very issue and got no replies. I believed that the previous workflow is the correct one but if there are other suggestions I'm open to ideas. Thanks

Hey Michael,

I know what you are trying to achieve and while I don't know the answer I do think it lies in Revit's ability to share coordinates across multiple files. Its not much different to having different people working on different parts of a BIM project then stitching them all together. Revit does this very well. Take a look at this resource.

If you drop it in origin to origin in revit, is it in the correct location?

If not, you need to use survey points to correctly locate the cloud.

you may be able to get it close updating the origin in recap, but it is not accurate enough to match to an existing model.

Autocad and navisworks will report transforms or translation, but AFAIK, revit will not, hence the problem.

If you have no survey control, ie targets, there are still ways to do it, but this is the easiest.

I tried origin to origin but because I can only open it in 3D views I cannot check coordinates. In recap I cannot get exact coordinates from the origin (that was my original question). My idea was to get the recap origin then locate the revit origin at the same point. After that the cloud would be visible in plan view in revit. Maybe I'll try to get some point from my original cyclone point cloud. I'll check back tomorrow.

if you have autocad or navisworks, bring the cloud in along with an nwc or dwg representation (export) of the revit file.

they are easier to work with the cloud and report translations.
