hi guys,

thanks a lot.

we are looking to get an "optimal" PC desktop to handle acad r14. some suggestions have been a Precision Workstation or an Optiplex 580 tower - with an additional suggestion to get an intel core 2 duo or a dual core processor. 4 GB RAM and 256 GPU with possibility to upgrade to 1 GB GPU. i am not a technical computer guy so i am trying to forward a specific machine with specific specs.

we had a machine that went south and we'd like to replace this installation. any suggestions on where to get help on this would be welcome.

we don't want to get into debates about why upgrading to newer software is advisable and we have discussed this with our software vendor.

TIA

Hi,

I guess AutoCAD R14 works on all workstations which are something like "modern". The system resources from the time of 1998 were much, much lower than any basic software developed today. So take anything and it will work a lot faster than a highest end workstation from 1998+/-.

What I would take care of:

I don't know, which of the current operating systems can run AutoCAD R14, I'm not sure, if you might have troubles with that.

Especially take care about the hardware lock (if you have one), so you need a parallel port/Centronics interface and you might need special drivers to get the interface running with the operating system, and to get AutoCAD working with that interface. That can be really tricky.

I agree with the above, any tech that is out there now ought to be more than enough to run R14, the downside, it may be too much. You may be into an uphill battle, Autodesk has stated that they will not be providing support to anything lower than 2013 on Windows 10, so if you have Windows 10 on this machine, R14 may not even function, and if it does, could be subject to errors and worse yet, Autodesk support wont be able to help you on it. You could try compatibility mode, but Windows 10 only has compatibility mode back to Vista.

There is no need to go new. I would be tempted to by another model just like your old PC. just google the setup you are trying to replace. you can find older PCs refurbished and for the price of a new PC you could probably by 3 to 4 replacement PCs. They run cheap like below $50.

Just shop you current setup and look for a refurbished machine. If you dont want to upgrade the software, there is no sense in upgrading the PC especially when the price is sooo cheap for those pcs.

hi TCn, all. so we will be running XP. i was hoping a specific dell recommendation with specifications so i could pass it along. i am only seeing the optiplex with AMD processors and it was advised to go intel. also i don't know whether the optiplex 580 is a good machine. the used PC place can /upgrade/ it but i was hoping to pass along specs for what we need since they have nothing in stock... thanks

if you're buying a modern machine, AMD or Intel are not going to matter much when it comes to running R14, they are both way more processor than what is required to run the software.

no, I was just stating that if that is what you had decided to do that AMD vs Intel wont matter much.

I agree with @TheCADnoob up above, I'd recommend seeing if you can find an older machine that more closely meets the specs of what you actually need, less likelihood of issues with tech that is too modern.

To run modern CAD is completely different than running a cad program that was released almost 20 years ago. You cant run them both on the same machine is the basic jest of what we are trying to say. In 1997 they didn't even probably dream of a 64 bit processor, or that one would ever need 32 GB of ram on a machine.

The specs for R14:

Hi,

>> You cant run them both on the same machine

Well, maybe the workstation runs with Windows 10 and AutoCAD R14 runs within a virtual system like Oracle VirtualBox or VmWare Player (also in that case, take care about the hardware lock as virtual systems might not find a parallel port).

valid point, good luck finding a modern machine that has a parallel or even a serial port on it these days.

hi. just trying to stay on point. we don't want to run a vm. we are looking for specs for a native install. perhaps there is a better forum for this?

seems weird to mash all of acad world into one forum. makes getting specific information pretty difficult...

On topic:

Minimum specs for a native install are above.

Off topic:

As for the forum, I dont know that there would be very much traffic, I'm not sure how many people out there are still using R14, the OS (Windows 95/98/NT) has been gone for a long time. I havent had a machine with less than 512 mb of ram in probably 10-15 years. There are quite a few AutoCAD forums, this is the only one I visit besides the Civil 3D one. I dont have time to keep tabs on that many locations.

You might try CadTutor

I ran R14 on Windows 7 for a long time. It took several days worth of hacking the registry to get it working and then there were a few things that didn't work as they should have.

My guess is getting it to work on Windows 10 would be a tough task, but if you're up to the challenge go for it. Not ideal but XP on a VM might be your best option.
