I have been using AutoCad for many years since version 12. The last version I acquired was AutoCad 2006 which I purchased many years ago. I have been using it ever since. I got a new computer and installed Autocad on it more than a year ago and have been using AutoCad on it. Last week I was using it and all of a sudden it says that I needed to register it. In fact when I first installed it, I provided the serial number and the activation code that I have. Three days from the day it asked me to register my AutoCad stop running. When I restart it, it requests the activation code and when I enter the activation code, I get an error message and the software asks me to contact Autodesk which is impossible because there Is no number through which one can reach a human being at Autodesk. When I access the Autodesk site and go through support I come to a dead end at which point I am told this version is not supported. So now I have a software that I fully own and cannot run it because Autodesk locked it. I contacted Autodesk through emails no answer. I tried twitter and was asked to come to this forum. I hope someone can help.
Any help will be very appreciated.
Thank you.

nothing Autodesk is going to do

you can subscribe to a newer version or dump Autodesk & switch to a competitor

Hi,

or ask a lawyer to force Autodesk to give you an activation code.

In case you have this version bought and it was never updated it's regulated by a license agreement without any end date. So in my (private) opinion Autodesk is not allowed to stop you from working with your license. I see that like bringing my car to a garage and they don't give me my own (fully paid) car back because it's more than 10 years old.

Hi,

you get an AutoCAD license with a serial number, this number stays the same as long as the product is valid.

After installing the software you are asked for an activation code (as long as online activation did not work) and that is created by Autodesk, depending on serial number as well as on operating system and hardware. So if you change the hardware or you install a new operating system you need a new activation code delivered from Autodesk.

I understand what you are saying. I fully own this 2006 and no end date to the software. I am not looking for techincal support. If AutoDesk keeps providing authorization codes without any hassle to users that is ok.

But I was just told by an AutoDesk support staff on a chat that he can give me a code but I will have to make sure I never change my device again or allow any updates to my operating system. How can anyone accept those conditions for a software that you fully bought many years ago and fully own? This staff member asked me to set my OS not to ever update again. Would AutoDesk take responsibility for any virus or malware damage to your device or privacy because of the fact that you refused Microsoft security updates in order to meet AutoDesk's requirements of keeping your OS from updating? If your device stops working is that not the end to your software? You pay for a software, you own it and the end of a device becomes the end of your software? How would that work?

Was any class action law suit ever initiated against AutoDesk because it is locking users out of their fully own copies of AutoCad in order to force them to rent AutoDesk products? All suggestions are welcome.

The software is no longer supported. If you want to continue to use it, you need to provide your own support. Set-up a machine, get it running, and disconnect that machine from all outside sources. Do not make any changes to it and you can theoretically use the software forever.

Good luck!

Do you mean that the software can run if it does not have any contact with the outside world no request for serial number or authorization code?

I don't have all the answers. You said that Autodesk offered you an activation code. You need to use that one to activate your software, not a previous one that doesn't work. Your software can need to be re-activated for a number of reasons. The only thing Autodesk is doing is not reactivating your old software. No remote interference at all. Once you get it up and running you need to prevent anything from happening to your system that would require the software to be reactivated. That is why it needs to be disconnected from all outside influences.

Good luck!
