topic 3D scanned Holders in PowerMill Forum

Hello,
How do you handle your tool holders?
Not all manufacturers provide CAD data, or if it concerns old already existing holders.
Do you scan them and use the contours without rework or do you simplify them?
I have always tried to keep the contours as simple as possible, but is that even necessary in 2023? Do complex holder contours require significantly more processing power and compute time? What about using complex holders with automatic collision avoidance? Not necessarily recommendable I guess... - even in 2023.
My experience - the simpler the tool/holder, the fewer contour steps the better results with automatic collision avoidance....

Probably collision check needs more time but I did not tested it.

I prefer simple holders because the shaded tool doesn't look that messy

If I could use the 3d scan with little or no rework it would be a very practical way to get the holder data.
But with all the rework, the 3d scans are hardly a time saver...
I can also handle callipers quite well 🙂

I would use simple shapes. Scanning makes for a very complex toolholder and you do not really benefit from it. Besides, getting some extra safety millimetres from the simplified shapes is a good thing!
