Object reference not set to an instance of an object

I am getting an error whenever I try to create a manual point, the error states: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I am able to bring in points via a CSV, but I can't place points (control or manual). It seems to be just this revit model as I am able to create points on my other projects.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is a bit odd that you are able to do Import but not Manual points. The one reason I know of for that error is when the shared parameter file cannot written to or be created if not existing yet. First, if you are working in a new project that was just created, try saving it, then see if you still get that error. If so, or if you are not in a new project, go to the manage tab, click on the shared parameters option, and verify there is a file listed, either way, try creating a new one somewhere you are sure to have write privileges to, such as My Documents, give it whatever name you want. Then try manually adding points again. Let us know if that solves it for you.

I do have a shared parameter file listed, and I tried to localize that file but I am still getting the same error. I am able to create points in other projects that are currently referencing that same shared parameters file.

Cole, what you are running into here is Point Layout attempting to store information, in this case tracking of last point # used, in to the project, and it finding an error in the project itself preventing it from storing this information.

If you go to your Manage ribbon, you will see that the "Project Information" button is disabled, this indicates some type of corruption to the project preventing it from accessing that information. This Link provides a simple process to clear up the issue, bascially starting a new project using the appropriate project template, and then from the corrupt project, using the Transfer Project information button on the Manage ribbon to restore the needed information.

After that is done, you should be all set to add points error free.

Let me know if this solution is applicable to Autocad Plant 3D?. I have the same error but with Plant 3D when I am creating isometric drawings.

Hi s.hamel,

I have just tried both alternatives, but the error continue. I found that the problem is with 45° elbow and 90° elbow, and I eliminated both and replaced them, but it can not solve the problem.

Please your support with other solution.

You really need to post this over in the plant 3d forum, this is outside my area of expertise. Looks like someone else is have a similar issue there in a recent posting, so you should add to that discussion.

I am getting the same error trying to place a point. My project information button is not greyed out and I am able to click it and see my project info.

Most likely you do not have a shared parameters file associated with the project. Go to the Manage ribbon, Shared parameters, and create a file in there. Potentially it is also set to one, but a read only one, fix is again to just create a new one.

Because the marked solution was valid for the posted question, user, and model, and situation, though admittedly I have never had another similar case before or since that occurred.

Hello,

I am facing the same issue. I have the correct share parameter file and even project information in the manage tab also works perfectly. Still Autodesk Point Layout not working. When I click on get the license it shows " Object reference not set to an instance of an object" I am facing the issue for the past 2 weeks.

The issue got sorted out. Reinstalled with the correct license and it's
working now. But I was facing issues earlier with Windows 11 and Revit2020,
the APL wasn't working properly.
