unhandled access violation reading 0x0000 exception at 504e426ch

When I try to use the command

Dim lsManager As LayerStateManager = sideDb.LayerStateManager

Dim lsLayers As ArrayList =
            lsManager.GetLayerStateLayers(lsName.StringResult, False)

                    Dim ly As String = ""

                    For Each layer As String In lsLayers
                        ly = ly + " , " + layer

                    Next

                    ed.WriteMessage(vbNewLine + "Layer = " + ly)

I can get and print out the layers...

But it works only in some files... other files show this error:

unhandled access violation reading 0x0000 exception at 504e426ch

What could happen?

Maybe lsLayers is NULL?
