I'm curious how many people here are professional developers. Are you CAD Managers that do Arx here and there, when you need to create some required functionality? Or do you exclusively write third party Arx applications? Are some of you just doing this for fun?

I taught myself AutoLisp (my first programming language), and then taught myself C++, just so I could develop Arx applications. I've been writing Arx apps off and on for about 6 years now. Although, I've never been employed to specifically develop AutoLisp or Arx for anyone. I just do this in my free time, so it's been a little slow going. I currently have a day job installing fire sprinkler systems; but works been slow lately, so I've been coding a lot.

Is there any serious demand for Arx developers? There doesn't seem to be a lot of people that frequent this forum. Maybe your all so busy writing interesting things and solving problems... Maybe most of the Arx developers are ADN members and don't need to come here. Is the ADN really worth the price? Besides the ADN, this forum seems to be the only place to ask for help when there's a problem...

There's not much demand for ARX developers, for several reasons.

First, there are other APIs that can be used to achieve many goals
more easily and with less volatility.

Second, there is managed ARX, which makes a very large subset of native ARX
functionality available to to managed code.

Last, many are not terribily thrilled with Autodesk's abysmal support of
AutoCAD development in general, mainly because Autodesk sees most AutoCAD
based solutions as being competitive with other Autodesk products that are
intensely targeted at AutoCAD users.
I'm a new ADN member, and have been exploring the ADN site to find answers to questions we've had for a while. We even found solutions for problems we didn't know we had (we're beginners to ARX development). But AutoDesk's focus (at least the way the ADN site is organized) is clearly more on selling you mentoring services than giving you easy access to self-help.

By "mentoring services" do you mean training classes? The ADN website says that the program comes with "technical assistance"; I assume this means that you can email someone at AutoDesk with a specific problem or question and they will 'try' to help you. Have you had any experience with the ADN technical assistance yet?

Yes, they have training classes, on-site consulting services, and mentoring services. If I understand correctly, the consulting services are one-time, scheduled appointments, but they cover general project topics. And the mentoring service is more specific to helping an individual developer, and may last for up to a week.

But no, I haven't used the technical assistance yet.

Yes I am a professional developer. I have been doing CATIA-Customization through CAA-V5 for past year or so and been on Autocad VBA for almost two months now. I am also curious about whether there is some demand for Object-ARX developers in the market.
