They provided an .fbx file instead of .obj and it comes in showing the material draped on the object. For some reason the coordinates are getting converted though. I'm told they are exporting the .fbx file with the correct coordinate system but for some reason it's not working. Not sure if it's there end during export or something in Navisworks when I'm importing.

Hi,

I have been given an .obj file with a materials.mtl file and a materials_textures folder containing png images. When I open the .obj file in Navisworks I don't see the image draped on the object. I tried downloading an OBJ importer app but it doesn't seem to help. Very little experience with Navisworks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Darren

Hello @darrenr, I hope you are feeling very well. The way I have solved this is as follows. I start from a very simple model created in 3ds Max, a simple box (it's just for example):

I have exported it taking care to export everything you say you have:

when imported into Navisworks, the box looks untextured, totally gray:

go to the render menu and open this option:

I select the box and then you will see that depending on how your model is you will have materials applied to it. So first step I select the model and second step I select the corresponding material:

you can already see the texture applied:

It is important that in the Viewpoint menu you have the Full Render visual style activated:

I hope you find it useful, best regards!

Thanks for the response. I was able to get it to work with the .fbx file rather than the .obj file. Unfortunately, the virtual reality software I'm using does not support materials so it wouldn't import even after fixing the issue in Navisworks. Also, the coordinates got resolved. For some reason it was set to centimeters and I just had to change them to meters and the imported in the correct space.
