You don't need to make a new either. Navis doesn't "lock" the file. You can export to the file while having it open in Navis and then just click [refresh]
(I found this thread having your exact thought-process)

{Rant start}

Seems like an overlooked function of being able to Close the current model and open another without having to exit Navisworks and start it again. Needs a close in the bin N menu and an X in the top RH corner of the model, LIKE PRACTICALLY EVERY OTHER SOFTWARE PRODUCT OUT THERE!

{Rant end}

As one can only open only one NWF at the time, using the NEW button or the open will close your current model and open the other one without the need to re-start Navisworks. So why would you need to use two buttons if one is sufficient.

A Close button would only make sence if Navisworks were able to open several Models simulatainiously, like practically every other software. Then you would need to be able to close only one and leave the others open.

Occaisonally annoying, but once you get used to using the NEW button its not much different. Although I've rarely had to close the program to open another file...

There's no zero-document state in Navisworks so like the others have said, closing isn't a valid operation. The best you can get is a blank, unsaved document.

Thanks for being helpful.

I have a similar case where I'm overwriting the file I just exported to Navis, and rather than closing Navis, exporting, reopening Navis, making a "new" blank file helps. Did not think about this process due to habit built from living in the 90's.

No "zero-state" screen in Navis, Thanks!
