How can you import laser scan from LFM into Navisworks Simulate 2016? Any help out there on this.

Although Navisworks can import some LaserScan file formats, the best results are if you start using Autodesk Recap also.

If the scans are "registerd" correctly with LFM software (registerd means that they are on put on the right coordinate system and all scans are merged together into one big cloud) you do not need the Pro version, the free Recap application is enough.

Don't get confused, there is also a Recap360 web service, but that is processing plain photographs, no laserclouds.

Export the Laserscan into the PTX format.

In Recap, import the PTX files, skip registration and index the PTX files.

You end up with a small RCP file, the Recap Project, and a support folder were all the data of that Recap Project is stored.

This Recap Project now can be attached to Navisworks 2016 and above with great quality and good speed, if you store the whole Recap project an a local SSD drive.

Then I usually import a CSV file to define Regions (you do need the Pro version for this)

and I export the regions into inividual unified RCS files, so I have an RCS file per room or floor.

Then I do not need to load the whole cloud into Navisworks.

The same Recap Project can also be attached to Autocad, Revit and Inventor, version 2016 and above.
