Dear Forum.

I'm working on a project and had done my own clash detection (I'm working for the Fire Sprinkler Contractor) but the main consultant on the project that is doing the coordination obviously did the 'official' one. I have received email stating

"We will need to use the Navisworks file that I send you. Open the file and the clash detective should find the associated .xls file and show you the clashes."

So I opened Navis, opened clash detective and it didn't seem to automatically find anything (I put the xlsx file in the same folder as the nwd file). I don't know how to 'import' or whatever the xlsx file needs to do within Navis. Can someone please provide insight as to how I can import the file so I'm looking at the same thing as them within Clash Detection?

Thank you in advance for any insight!

Unfortunately, the XLS file can not be imported in to the Revit. Ask the main contractor to provide you the XML file, for the viewpoints. You can import XML file into the viewpoint panel to look through the clashes.

Here is the link to how to import XML.

It's not common, but they may have set up Data Tools on their end to use the Excel workbook as a data source. Excel, while more human-readable, makes for a *lousy* database though.

Note that when I generate a clash report, I publish the NWD file along with the clash viewpoints, comments, etc. so everyone is working off the same visuals. Also means that the recipient doesn't require Manage (most of our engineers only get Freedom).

Thank you very much for you insight dgorsman!!

I'm still trying to find out from them the use of the xlsx file. They have however for now sent me on the nwd that they did the clash on. I have Manage so I can use the clash check and then mark up the xlsx file in excel based on what I'm going to change vs they to change, etc.

Trying to find out more but I can work for now with the clash check in Navis. I'll let you know if it was set up as a Data Tools type feature or not.

Thanks again for your time. Was holding off responding until I had more information, etc.

Best Regards.

Just had it confirmed that they weren't doing anything exotic with the xlsx file. We had received incorrect direction initially. The intent is that since we have Manage we use the nwd file that they did the check with (didn't have that same file when I had posted), mark up the xlsx file with what we fixed versus need other to look at, etc.

Thanks again for your response!

And thank you for getting back with the results. Reminds me of a story from the age of the space race between the US and Russia. Americans devote massive engineering resources to creating a pen that works in microgravity. Russian solution? They gave their cosmonauts pencils. Sometimes we just overthink things.
