follow up question / solution.

If I clone my low polygon object and then subdivide it in Maya about 3 times, then bring that into Mudbox, my result is much better.

Is this a typical workflow?

The mudbox displacement extraction seams to be giving a weird result. It does not provide a smooth displacement as per the sculpt, but alters it based on the low polygon object.

The resulting displacement smooths if increase levels in mudbox, but if taken into Maya, it does not, it keeps the polygonal look.

edit: the UVs are good... nice and square. Nothing is overlapped and lots of buffer space.

Please see attached image.

what is your extraction settings for the displacement. I believe the hard angle is due to using subdivison method without smooth uvs.
There are few options:
1) Extract displacement with Raycasting with smooth target UVs turned off.
2) Extract with Subdivision method with Smooth target UVs on.
3) Extract displacement at a higher subd level for the Target Model.

Try to See which one fits you the best. Hope that helps

Yes, I have tried both 1 and 2. Neither worked.

All I have gotten work well has been to subdivide in maya and then project onto that.. Then use the map on the lowest poly model.

An extra step, but it works.

@Anonymous

I will test this workflow in Mudbox 2018 because it's my understanding that the result should be better than the screenshots you attached.

Are you using a high poly model in Maya? The idea of displacement maps is to save polygon count on the model during render time.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work either. I have tried multiple variations of the settings and none seem to work. Recently I have also played with the subdivision options in Mudbox as well in regards to UVs and those have not changed anything either.

My best result has been to clone the object in Maya, Apply a Mesh > Smooth with 2 subdivisions. Delete it's history and then export and sculpt in Mudbox. I then use the basic Subdivision method for extracting the displacement and apply that map to the original low poly object.
