Hello Friend, I hope you were able to fix the issue but if you haven't maybe I can help. The same thing happened to me when I first started using toon shaders and the contour filter. When you open the rendered EXR in Photoshop there should be a box that comes up asking how you'd like to open it; either as Alpha Channel or Transparency. I can't remember which one is on top or on bottom, but I know to choose whatever the second option is. Then your full rendered image should appear with your outlines.

The only problem is that now your image has no transparency. This would be fine if you don't plan on compositing, but if you do.....then it will be annoying. So this is where AOV's come in! you can check this thread out here...it helped me alot. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-shading-lighting-and/arnold-contour-filter-renders-transparent/m-p/8152596/highlight/true#M26046 go to message 16 of 21. Hope this helps friend!

Arnold's Render only displays toon edges with the contour filter

So I've been doing this tutorial : https://docs.arnoldrenderer.com/display/A5AFMUG/Making+of+Sophie

Everything works fine until I have to make the final renders in .EXR format, on the Beauty AOV, shot in RGBA with the contour filter.

The result is this (I put a black background on Photoshop to see it better) :

The .EXR format

So, basically for some reason the Arnold Render is not rendering out anything other than the toon edges on the shader, including some areas which I used the Standard Surface shader.

While if I change the format to .JPG I get a normal render, instead :

The .JPG format

Why is this happening? Because this is really puzzling me and I'm interested in fixing this, if possible.

The Alpha Channel is completely black on the .EXR format, it was supposed to have the outlines in the alpha but for some reason they're not there.

I'm rendering everything through Arnold on the Render Image button. Am I doing something wrong?

Here are screenshots from some of the Render Options :

Nope...

I shot this render inside Maya 2018 Service Pack 5

Maybe trying in Maya 2019 will work, it's much better after all in my opinion.

If you're using After Effects to view it, it will come out black or white with just the contours. If you right click on the file and select interpret footage -> ignore alpha, then it will appear the way that you expect it to. If you use Nuke it will appear fine.
