Maya file not loading as well as repetitive error message on windows 10

2 part question: some fellow students and I are having issues where a Maya file is somehow turning into an extremely large file and then will not open, despite showing that the file size remains the same. I have read that this is essentially not recoverable in MB file format, is this different for MA files? And what causes this? Is it that the geometry is messed up and causing Maya to not like the file? Or is it something else?

Second question - I have windows 10, and occasionally (Whether using Autodesk products or not), a notification pops up in my bottom right screen and says something about error, requested process cannot be completed, etc. When I click on it to resolve it, it just disappears and does not lead me anywhere. Wondering what might cause this and how to fix it.
