Maya C++ API Animation

Hey everyone,
I'm working on developing C++ plug-ins for Maya and have got basic plug-ins to work just fine and I'd like to move on to some more complicated applications. First up is just a simple animation of a joint in a skeleton. But, the problem I'm facing is the literature out there on using the specific animation libraries in Maya is either non-existent or a tad too abstract to understand.

Soooo, I was hoping I could get some guidance on the steps to animate a joint (just a simple animation). I can do it with MEL but I'd like to try and do it from within the plug-in (in other words, using C++).

I've kind of picked up some stuff about using nodes, the dependency graph, and possibly MFnAnimCurve (but honestly, I'm not sure where to really start from).

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!
