a year later and I've picked this tool back up. Same problem though I don't know how to display color feedback for the weight data.
I'm still pretty novice with the API, so I'm not sure if I should be going down the route of creating a hardware shader(devkit\plug-ins\hwColorPerVertexShader.cpp) or just writing directly to the renderer(devkit\plug-ins\narrowPolyViewer.cpp).

Most or all of the hardware shader examples and documentation seems to be focused on creating shader nodes as the output whereas I just want to temporarily override the shader during the tool context, and need to update the data being passed to the shader on the fly based on the users input(joint selection).

Any help on where I should be looking for direction on what I want to do would be much appreciated.

After finishing a volume brush vert painting tool(using python & API) I started working it over for skin weight painting, but can't seem to find a skin weights display function. I'd prefer not to create a temporary color set every time the tool is entered.
