Ah okay, that is very helpful to know, thanks a lot again. I think I will look in to other ways of importing files from Solid Works to Maya. I have many other parts that experience the same problem, so I hope to find an easier way to fix this. Anyway, I learned a lot, so thanks!

Hey,

It might be good to mention that I imported a STEP file. The first problem I discovered was that it imported the model as a nurb where one surface was reversed, making it look all black. I converted the nurb to a polygon and reversed the correct surface. This still did not solve everything. I combined it into one mesh, but it still looks as if there are two flat surfaces and one curved surface. The picture below shows the converted polygon mesh and a low quality render of it.

Has anyone an idea how to fix this? Or maybe there is a better way to import files from SolidWorks?

Thank you for your response!

I now tried soften and harden edge. It does get hard edges as you can see below, but if you then go back to soften edge you get the same render as you can see in the picture in the first message.

Hi,
if your mesh got converted from parametric surface, you may check if the vertices are merged correctly.

go to Display->Polygons->custom polygon display

then check border edges and increase the Edge width value.

if you have a thick line where you edge look hard then your vertices are not weld OR simply select the faces then move them to see if their vertices are merged.

If you still have an issue with the hard line, then Mesh display -> conform

other solution:

Please send us your scene. I'm just guessing for now but it would be much easier to tackle your issue with the scene.

cheers

Thanks a lot for the effort and sorry I did not included a file sooner, it is attached now. It indeed shows the thick edges at the beginning of the curve. I think I have merged everything now, but it still does not make the render any better. Mesh display --> Conform sadly does also not solve it for me.

Just opened your scene.

You have a well known problem while converting nurbs to poly look at the selected vertices. They are merged to nothing. So you will need to do extra work, like merging them like it dit bellow (to illustrate). Or get zbrush then do a remesher or something
