Hi zewt,

I am not using any plugins or any X-ray stuff. I am running 2020, I don't see a .2 anywhere, but it should be the latest up to date version. I had been having this problem ever since I installed Maya and began using it until my spontaneous and unexplainable fix yesterday. Now it works perfectly every time (so far). It does tumble around the pivot point I believe, but now I can hit F and actually rotate around something without being shot into oblivion.

What I was experiencing is just like what you described, but it's just stock Maya. I'm very new to 3D modeling at all, so I don't know, I may have screwed something up on set up. No clue.

This is an issue I run into a lot with Maya, and that is that when I'm navigating around my object the camera fixes its tumble pivot point somewhere random and far away, so even one pixel of a move on my cursor will send my object off the screen.

I have gone into View > Camera Tools > Tumble Tool Options and enabled Tumble on Object as well as changed Tumble about to Tumble Pivot, and even enabled Automatically set tumble pivot. Yet for some reason it did not change anything.

Basically I want to set it up so that the camera ALWAYS tumbles around the object I have selected, or just always around the world center (0,0,0). What am I missing here? What kind of files can I provide? I do not know how to make a screencast.

Thanks in advance!

Taylor

So, somehow it fixed itself. The only thing I did was restart Maya and reopen the scene, but even then I was still encountering the same issue. On a whim, I held Shift and tried again, and it seems to have fixed it. No idea why, but now it's working exactly as I had hoped and I only had to hold shift the one time.

Weird. Probably a bug?

How far away are you ending up? There's a bug with tumble on object and X-ray objects that sometimes causes the camera position to teleport out of the galaxy and you end up with a camera position in the billions. That only happens if you're using plugins that draw in X-ray, I've never seen anything built-in triggering it.

Other than that specific problem, I always use tumble on pivot and I haven't seen this. If I click and tumble on a mesh, it always pivots around the point I clicked on. Are you in 2020.2?
