hey, dont know the real reason of this problem, i have it couple of times, next time try delete history before close Maya, or make extra saves in obj format

I am tying yo develop my modeling abilities in Maya 2019 on my 2013 iMac. I've been at it for a year. I keep running into the same problem. The topology appears to break.

Can someone explain what is happening to my model?

Hello,

It seems like you have 2 models in the same spot being displayed. Polysurface6 looks to be in triangles where PolySurface7 is a quad model? Was PolySurface6 the original and PolySurface7 was a duplicate? It looks like your model is being triangulated but the original geometry had flaws. This can happen if you are doing Modify and converting to polygons from nurbs or subdivision surfaces to polygons, with triangulate enabled instead of quads. If you did re-mesh or retopologize , this can also this if you do not have quads as the output geometry. Same with smoothing operations, so I would suggest that you check the tool settings before running the tool to make sure that quads is the output geometry; if that is what you need. Are you using quad draw? What other clues can you give to what you did before you noticed that the model's topology was messed up?

Good Luck!

could be a gpu problem. try switching your subdivision method from "openSubdiv Catmull-Clark)" to "Maya Catmull-Clark".
