Hi, I am taking my first steps into modeling and all I have is my old maya 2012 copy and I was told that I needed "roughness" added to my model to make it look realistic, could someone tell me where to find this option in maya 2012 and if there isn't one could you tell me the best equivalent option?

Your question is vague, impossible to guess the means and the aim. You can achieve a lot with textures and normal maps, if you need too uneven surface, then learn about displacement maps. Also, see what are specifics of your renderer of choice.

The roughness is an attribute of a shader applied to the surface.

2012.... what render engine? If it is Mental ray, you should look in to MAI MATERIAL XPASS.
