That green shows up when the object has lost its connection to its material or shader (like Lambert1 for default). Just assign a new material to it and you should be fine.

Hi, I'm pretty new to maya and am modeling to 3d print. My first model exported and printed fine, but I made another and now when I export selection the model turns green and in the stl 3d object file the object is a complete mess. the first model I used symmetry on a polygon and the second time I mirrored the other half.

My question is why is this happening and are there best practices to avoid it from happening? (I'm also new to posting to the forum so I don't know best practices for this either).

Okay I thought I tried that and it seemed to fix the green, but it is still a mess in the 3d viewer after exporting to STL file format.

So I was wrong, it still changes to green even after I've assigned a new material and still shows as a jumbled mess once exported.

So if I move the model out of place and the export it a green shadow model appears where it was. I have no idea what is going on...

This looks like you have multiples of the same object all in the same place. Take a look in the Outliner and see how many objects are there.
As far as it being a mess when you export an STL, that depends on the geometry and I'm not even sure where to begin debugging that.
