Face selection?

Why when I'm using the face selection tool does the middle dots appear in the faces that are able to be selected - and having to click on the actual dot itself instead of the whole face to select? Is it possible to just select the face, without having to dot select them - example in image below:

You can change Maya's preferences to get the behavior you want.

From the menu at the top of Maya, go to Windows->Settings/Preferences->Preferences. Under the Settings section on the left you'll see menu option named Selection. Click on Selection and under Polygon Selection you can tell it to select faces with the whole face instead of the center.
